My trip to AutoZone and Lowe's was a disaster. Maybe I should go watch this dumb movie instead. Nah.

I wouldn't normally pull out the Don Draper gif among friends, but the setup was just to perfect to pass up.

I'll make a case for it that no one will read.

Remember in Raiders when he was teaching and all the girls in his class were dripping wet, and one of them had even written "love you" on her eyelids like an absolute psycho? They do a brief scene of him teaching in the new movie - again, really interesting topic and same bumbling teaching style, but his balls are so gray and saggy now, and no one wants to fuck him. No one is paying attention at all. It's the perfect metaphor for how the world now views old relics like Indiana Jones, and it's goddam shame.

I went into this film very prepared for the worst. I hated Crystal Skull. I watched it again. I hated it even more. I expected this to be better, but I also thought it probably wouldn't be good. I honestly left the theater with tears in my eyes and the thought that Raiders, Crusade, and Dial are the perfect Indy trilogy.

I knew the de-aging was coming, and for me this was the worst part of the movie because I fixated on it. The mouth still doesn't look right. It took me out of it a little even though it was a cool scene. That is my only complaint, and it's minor. If you can stand Tarkin in Rogue One, this won't even register. If you watch it on tv rather than a giant screen, you won't even notice.

You know what is great about Indy movies? Punches fucking land. They sound amazing and they put people on their asses. I love that. Mangold does everything right. He even gets that Wilhelm scream in there. And John Williams' old music still raises my goosebumps. Mads is a great villain and his lackeys (one is the main bad guy on the new Justified) are excellent as well. Sallah is in it just enough. Banderas isn't distracting. The kid they got isn't quite as charming as Short-Round, but he also isn't offensive to an entire population.

One of two main complaints I've heard is too many chases. What a dumb criticism if you like the other movies. Raiders and Crusade are chases from start to finish. Christ, Crusade is on a train, on horses, tanks, camels, boats, planes, motorcycles, a fucking zeppelin. Was there a mode of transportation they missed? The feature chase in this with the little three wheel car was super fun.

The other complaint I've read is that the girl sidelines Indy and it's woke Disney. Bullshit. Indy is always part of an ensemble. He still has plenty to do. The new girl is as good as Elsa. Much better than Kate Capshaw, whose Fay Wray imitation is the main reason Temple isn't that good (yes, this movie is way better). She's no Karen Allen, but guess what? You get to see her. No way that's a spoiler at this stage.

There is moment near the end where Indy and Marion are alone together. They do a lovely little callback to Raiders, but even before that, I had tears in my eyes. It honestly wasn't even the weight of the scene. For me, it was seeing Harrison Ford and Karen Allen in a scene together over 40 years after their first. How are they that old? How is the kid who saw Crusade in the theater at 13 now 46 and watching Indy's last adventure with his own 13 year old? My God, life goes quickly. If I get to live as long as Harrison Ford, I will watch this several more times.

I agree with most of what you posted, and I’m one of the people that complained of “too many chases”.

Raiders does chases scenes and is under 2 hours

Dial does chase scenes and it’s 2.5 hours

I think there is room for improvement imo. But it could be my point in life where I don’t want to watch long movies anymore.

This movie is leaps and bounds above Crystal Skull. I thought I read at the time of filming Crystal Skull that Harrison Ford didn’t want to travel a lot for filming, so they were limited to Hawaii (I believe) to stand in for South America. It feels and looks like a lot of stage work.

Dial is filmed all over and feels like the globetrotting spectacle we’ve come to expect.

Another interesting note: it’s funny how when they go to search Dionysius ear that they have to sneak around the tourists. Another aspect of changes from how Indiana Jones had normally done his adventures in the late 30s.

This is where I am. Daft's case for this movie is almost entirely based on nostalgia. It was great to see them again. It reminded me of the other movie. John Williams's old music made me feel things. I can't believe I used to be younger and now I am older. They even used a Willhelm scream. Member when. Member when. Member when

Anyone can like any movie for any reason but that doesn't sound compelling to me at all. And given that my favorite Indy movie is Temple of Doom by some distance and everyone who really loves this one seems to trash that one, I really don't think there's much for me here.

Is there any way to make a new IJ movie 40 years after the original that doesn’t use nostalgia?

I think it would be impossible.
