I’ve been waiting until today to set up my sons’s Switch 2 for Christmas morning but now he has the flu so I can’t spend the whole day on the couch with it. I obviously feel bad for him but god damnit.

You can set it up in handheld mode. The big decision is do you want to migrate your Switch 1 data to your Switch 2? You must decide now and you can't change your mind later. It removes it from your Switch 1 too. I did not migrate.

I didn't migrate anything either. It's pretty easy to set up the Switch 2 and switch back and forth between the OG and the 2 when needed.

Ooo thanks that’s a good tip! So saved won’t come over, right? He can probably live with that. Anything else I should think about while setting it up?

Most of the other set-up is reminiscent of setting up a Switch 1. As long as you have your Nintendo account ID and password, set-up + updates will probably take less than an hour.

And if you have a Nintendo Online account all your save data will be available on either device.

Battery seems to drain faster than the Switch Oled. Had to charge it twice today already. Will try turning the brightness down.

It also charged super, super slowly out of the box for me, even when I wasn’t downloading games. My wife and I were up until 11:00 setting things up and even in the dock the highest I got was 94%. Took it out and wrapped it up from there. About an hour until the kids get up!

Yeah, the battery and screen quality are a noticeable step down from the OLED.

A shame about the battery, but super exciting for your kids.

That is a surprise to me.

Saw there is a new Mario Tennis. Will Golf follow? I would buy a Switch 2 for that.

2025 Nintendo Year in Review

89 Games (125 hours played)

Top 3 Games:
Civilization VII for Switch 2 56 hours
Kirby and the Forgotten Land 5 hours
EA Sports FC 26 4 hours

January through May 2025 I played less than two hours on the Switch. From June on I played fairly regularly, with September being a lone low point. Picked up a bit now with the Switch 2, that I bought for Christmas.

Big Animal Crossing update this week (it released a day early). Time to clean some weeds.

Picked up Metroid Prime 4 again after a holiday hiatus. Also working towards the end of Bananza.
