I'd agree - the 'fragile life' line and 'could be for me next time' are particularly connecting and it was the first time I've had a really deep emotional response to a song since Riot Act. I'll avoid the soppy exposition about having kids and realising how fragile life is (but it is something that hits you hard). It's one of those observations that is so banal yet when you actually grasp it is a truly enormous moment. It's not just kids that give you that perspective but it is a different experience.

The other part (sirens coming for you) is that your the old guy now yet your kid sees you as invincible. I now have to cope with the knowledge that I am actually totally vincible but know the expectation from my two young sons - again, not just a parent thing but it does give you an unavoidable perspective on things.

Of course if this is where the song is coming from and you don't quite relate to those feelings then it is possibly just Inside Job Part II. I'm disappointed Jeff didn't use his 12-string to give a bit more of a homage to Cheap Trick.
I think it was Billy Connolly who said as he got older he found himself crying more and more, even over mindless sentimental commercials. Since my son's birth I feel that.
My son turned 3 today and my parents are staying with me after not seeing them for 9 months so it's probably irrationally amplified. Just another loser dad!

I agree with all this, and have been suspecting that both this song and Future Days are about relationships to their children, but made generally enough to reach to connect to a wider audience regarding the larger role of interpersonal intimate relationships.

Actually, I'm finding myself liking Sirens better than MYM. It just feels like a much bolder statement. After the Sirens sudden left turn, MYM feels like pretty standard fare for PJ.

2nd chorus and 3rd chorus lyrics the same or very close.
From memory, the Even Flow video is a mix between the Abbruzzese studio version and the live version from the Moore Theatre.

The Fixer video was also a live performance as far as I recall. It also really, really sucks.
the guitars sound better on the fixer video. But it is that video and it is that song

This song is kinda growing on me. I actually don't mind it, but I'm still not ready to say I like it.

It's just weird...like all their music from 10 through RA is just nothing like this. They had slow/chill songs, but without going all Winger / Warrant on us. I mean, this number here has that "Heaven Isn't Too Far Away" vibe going on, mixed with some of the power pop of 90's Aerosmith. While I don't really like that kind of music, maybe I'm giving this song a pass because it's Pearl Jam. I'm still not sure quite how to describe it, my first though was "Pearl Jam meets Bon Jovi". I'm still surprised that the band that seemed so against music like this has been delivering songs like "Just Breathe" and "Sirens".

All signs point to me hating this song, this style just isn't my thing. However, I kinda like it. After about 5 listens now, I can confidently say I like it better than "Amongst The Waves". Maybe this is the best of the worst of recent Pearl Jam. My "worst" list includes: ATW, Inside Job, Gone, and really most of Backspacer.

It's less bubblegum hooky than a Katy Perry song, or even something like New York State of Mind, because it's more of an adult radio type song. It's still a really long chorus section. And since my point was that the dynamic bulge in this song's crotch was a little too long for my preference, I'll refer to it as the kaboom instead to avoid confusion.
- and the song is over 5 minutes long.
The video version is 5:56, and the three kabooms add up to roughly 2:15 of that altogether...not counting the outtro, which is just an extension of the last one. It's not like I'm saying that's a bad thing. I'm saying it's too much of that for me.

Basically, all I'm saying is that, as I have been listening to and not caring for this song, I'm trying to figure out what it is that keeps me from getting pulled in....and I think some of that is that it spends more time kabooming and less time building a bedrock to kaboom off of than I care for.

I would definitely say that I like it better than Inside Job, Gone, The Fixer and Just Breathe. ATW has surprisingly been growing on me of late, so I might put it on equal footing with Sirens right now, but Sirens definitely has much more potential as a grower... especially the live version from the video.
