Oh man, this song is going to sound so good live when they play it at that tempo.

Release_Me wrote:My favourite from the album at this point. From 2:47 onwards, this is my PJ heaven. The chorus is the best part of the album for me. In my opinion, this is the most successful Pearl Jam have ever been in trying to pull of an 'experimental' song. I would be happy with more experimental stuff if it is in this vein rather than what they attempted on No Code or Binaural.
This is what I wrote yesterday. The song has got better for me since. Do we have the 6 star option?
Ed's vocals on this thing (second half) are some of his best ever. I won't be surprised if they change it up live. This will take a heavy toll on his voice while touring if they try to replicate it. Sadly, that will make it a much lesser song for me. Still, I would love to hear it live just to see what they do with it. On evidence of the studio version, this is the bomb.

It's a good song overall, but I kind of wish Eddie pursued a completely different vocal melody... It could have been so much more gritty and interesting. Oh well, it's still pretty good.

the only thing I wonder about this song in terms of how it ages is if the transition between chorus and bridge need to be more prominent. That brought down Amongst the Waves for me. The melody changes, but it still kinda seems like Eddie is singing the same part a bit--not a very stark contrast. But this song has different dynamics than Amongst the Waves, and so it may not matter
Still my favorite of the bunch

Annoyed that the tom distortion is still present at 2:20 on the 320 CD rip...

My take on this vocal melody situation is quite well known by now, or so I would like to think. Just to reiterate, I was originally drawn into PJ because of how they excelled at the soft/loud, gritty/catchy, light/dark (whatever you want to call it) dynamic. If I take Vitalogy (my no. 1 ) as a reference, they used this same dynamic to a certain extent on nearly all the songs. Last Exit, Corduroy, Nothingman, Better Man, Not For You all alternate between these types of moments in different ways.
If Infallible was built primarily around the verses and the chorus never 'soared', it would be akin to having Nothingman never take off at the 'She once believed' part. Or all of Corduroy being sung like the intro ('the waiting drove me mad'), without the melodic 'I don't want to take what you can give' part, etc. It would be a lesser song in my view. They get the balance just right here.

oh I get that. I just wonder if there needs to be an even starker change.

I don't feel the song needs that, really. But of course, I'll never know for sure because this version is how I've learnt the song. As it is, from 2:47 onwards, we get a really big change when Ed starts to wail the chorus. That's the most chills I've felt in a while.

The chorus if far too Aguilera-ey. Without that, this could have been a great track. Instead, it's unlistenable.

I don't hear it. Even if I did, there is absolutely zero effect it would have on my perception of this song. Given To Fly was supposedly a rip off of Led Zepp's Going To California. I never cared because it is so much the better song for me. What a song reminds me of or doesn't remind me of has absolutely no bearing on whether I like it or not. Either way, it's no cooler to sound like Led Zepp than Christina Aguilera for me.

This chorus, especially in the second half of the song, is the best part of the album for me. The best part of any PJ album in a long, long time. Ed's singing is also some of his best ever.

It's because "Thinking we're infallible" sounds like "You are beautiful". It's those two unemphasised syllables followed by that fucking "ul" syllable. Ugh, why did that have to be there?

Song ruined.

So is it bothering anyone the way Ed pronounces the word "instead" in the first chorus? He does this weird thing on the "d" where it sounds like he has a cold and bogey is dripping from his nose.

this song has grown on me quickly. ed's vocal delivery in the verses is awesome, it kinda reminds me of rap for some reason. but so the way he sings in my father's son so i obviously have no idea what im talking about lol.

So this song is great. It may end up in my top ten. It is to early to tell, but it will not surprise me.

The first time my wife heard this she mentioned Eminem. So I have come to this conclusion the great Pearl Jam song formula.
Intro Hip hop thing like Eminem
Verse cool Ed lyrics
Chorus teen pop
outro The Beattles Hey Jude outro

Hahaha The Beatles "Hey Jude", that's it. As well as Procol Harum "Whiter Shade of Pale". And "Lose Yourself" by Eminem.

Lose yourself into Christina I have to go listen to Whiter Shades of Pale now. It is getting weird "you gotta never let her go" and "and I read it in a magazine" from Benny and the Jets
