I don't know if it's better to read stip's reactions as trolling or the real thing. Both would be impressive.

That is precisely why Beatles naysayers get such a hard time. There is a bolded underlining of unique-snowflake-ism that makes them hard to take seriously.

I kinda like that descending guitar bit between each lyrics. Otherwise this song doesn't really hold together in any way I can easily make sense of. Not that it's a complicated song. But I sorta feel like everyone is playing a different song and then they spliced them all together. It reminds me of some of the songs REM wrote before they released chronic town, when they were trying to learn how to write songs.
It looks like every single Beatles song may have its own entry on wikipedia.

I think it'd help the beatles if they had more songs like "It's All Too Much"

This wasn't bad. Catchy, and I like whatever that harmonica sounding thing is between verses, and there is a little bit of grit in the vocals.

I'm still waiting for the "Happiness is a Warm Gun" review. I'm foaming at the mouth, actually.

he'd like it a lot better if the beatles weren't singing it, if it wasn't this song, and was one of the songs on The Fixer or an REM song, or something.

how was this never used for a james bond movie? The first part, anyway. It's actually kinda intriguing. It's got that dump dump dump sing songy quality so many of their songs have that I don't really care for, but this isn't bad. There's a little bit of danger here. It's interesting. For about the first 50 seconds. Then it starts to lose me. I just have so much trouble taking the beatles seriously when they're being serious/intense
it kinda feels like a few different songs spliced together.
So this is a Beatles highpoint, is it? This is as good as rock music gets?
Why?

I'd argue this is as good as rock music gets:

okay: long and winding road
I gotta be honest, I wanted to turn this off the second McCartney started singing.
this is way too saccharine for me.
So this is what 'drenched in strings' sounds like. It's sopping.

But to answer your question. There are a lot of reasons I think this one of the best rock songs out there. The way Lennon's voice slides along melody. The outstanding imagery in the lyrics. The way the time signature switches on a dime during "mother superior jumped the gun." The overall atmospheric quality and the various movements of the piece. It pushes the boundaries of what a pop song can be. And it's melodic! So melodic! And mysterious but also biting.
