oohh, further incentive.
Today: Upper Body Workout A, upped weights on most exercises.

Edit: I like the sound of this:
Dana Riederer wrote:While all forms of training are of great benefit, running offers a specific benefit due to the nature of muscle contractions it entails. The lengthening of an activated muscle is known as eccentric contraction. This type of muscle contraction is heavily relied upon during running and results in very high muscle force, tissue injury and consequent muscle soreness. Some or all of these factors provide a powerful strengthening stimulus to the muscle fibers that are broken down during running.

Reservations made for a late-April Rim to Rim run at the Grand Canyon. Sub-4:30 seems pretty realistic. If things go well, I'll hit it again in the fall for Rim to Rim to Rim.

Decided to run, 5K, before shoveling today; much smarter move and 33° felt almost tropical compared to recent highs.

5 miles in 34 minutes
Spent most of the night at the urgent care because my son decided to stick a rock in his fucking ear. Darted out at 9 and did a quick 5. Even split. Quarter-mile finishing kick. I'll do 90 minutes on the indoor track tomorrow. Fucking kids!

I see you pacing in your New Balance 85000's looking at your wristwatch while your kid is crying with blood coming out of his ear.

Thinking about doing the
Bataan Memorial Death March out near the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. I'd do the heavy division, which requires a backpack of at least 35 lbs. My friend did it and said jogging/walking it with the backpack was tougher than running a 50-miler. I'm intrigued.

I like the sound of that... also, I want your weather.
Recently got the layout of my CF fundraising hike, looks like a bitch but really can't wait.
Today: Supersets.

10 miles in 69 minutes
Crazy beautiful evening and I decided to hit the canal instead of the indoor track. Took it easy and enjoyed myself. 35 out. 34 back with a decent finishing kick. Sunset was spectacular.

10 miles in 85 minutes
Holy fuckballs! My neighbor's a hunter and I knew he had a huge bucket of buckshot, so we filled my Camelbak (minus the bladder) with 20 pounds of it. I hit the canal and was fucking miserable. I contemplated turning around at the 2 1/2-mile spot, but continued. Back started to hurt and I stopped to adjust the pack. Hit the turnaround in 42 minutes. Started to die with 3 miles left and I again had to stop to adjust the pack. Obviously, a finishing kick was out of the question unless it was gonna be a final leg twitch before death.
Zero chance of me "running" a marathon with a 35-pound pack.

Yeah, I'm doing this. It's gonna suck and I won't do well (mostly because I have a 12-year-old's upper-body), but I haven't actually raced in almost 2 years. It's fucking time.

Saturday: 2.5 miles on the treadmill before heading to Long Island then shoveling after midnight when we got back.
Sunday: Upper Body Workout B
Streak: 44
Went to peruse for a pair of running shoes and ended up getting a pair, looking forward to the first run especially after sucking mile wise this weekend.

10 miles in 83 minutes
Hit the canal with the 20-pound pack again. Felt better tonight. 42 out. 41 back with something kinda resembling a finishing kick. May skate out of work early tomorrow to hit a trail with the pack. Think I'll stick with at least 10 miles a day from now until the race.

5 miles in 36 minutes + sit-ups, planks and push-ups
Felt pretty beat-up this morning, so I decided I wasn't gonna do another pack run. I did about 15 minutes of planks and sit-ups, then did 5 miles on the canal. Pathetic push-ups and more planks when I got back. Gonna run late tomorrow night. Looking forward to the time off. Late for work again.

Monday: 5K on the new shoes, legs felt great but the chili I had for dinner did not.
Tuesday: Truncated Upper Body Workout A then shoveling another six inches of snow, pretty beat after that which sadly only led to a few hours of sleep.
Today: 5.6 miles, body felt far more spent than basically any run previous; feet feel good and the new kicks have definitely smoothed my running. Gotta look at some other cause for my shit-ass performance as of late with my first half marathon a little over three weeks out.

Oasisfan, I gotta tell you the late night/early morning trick I have been doing during the week is pretty great. Run/work-out at 10 at night, then at 7 the following morning, then you get an almost-40 hour break before you run at 10 the following night. This method has really working for me. I think I have only had one run that I really didn't want to do and most of my runs have been pretty great.
This technique has kept my energy levels high.

Wednesday:
10 miles in 84 minutes
Hit the canal with the 20-pound pack and the youngest in "shitty" running stroller. Felt good and my girl spent the entire time singing to herself. Even split. Readjusted the pack before I started because I was developing a nasty welt on my back where it rubbed. Some pathetic sit-ups and planks afterward. Solid run, but training for this race is gonna make me slow as molasses.
Thursday:
5 miles in 36
Early morning run. Warm. No jacket, no pack. Legs felt good. Even split.
Streak: 54

I'd certainly have to see where I can fit a night/morning run in but it may be worth a shot, especially after the race and the fact that I've really been enjoying the runs for the most part.
When I Actually sat down and thought about it, I realized that I never changed my calories when I started running. I was on a lower calorie count to lose a bit of weight to go along with the exercise but when I actually started training for the half I never compensated. That said, my BMR is around 1550. I actually believe I've been short changing my lunches so I was probably only taking in around 950 to 1000 before dinner so an average day
may see me hit 1400 to 1500.
This is most likely the main culprit, I'll be adding some clean calories and look forward to Saturday's run.
