I don't have a strong opinion on these movies. I didn't expect much from the first two, and was entertained. They were equal parts wonderful (Gollum, Smaug), formulaic (those goddamned elves) and groan inducing (the stupid river/Goblin-town scenes). With the exception of the plastic orcs, I think these movies are beautiful; I don't know what McP's post was meant to prove. They aren't realistic, but I don't care.

The worst sin is cutting off the climax of the second one to tack it on to the beginning of the third one. Pure moneygrab material, though honestly the plot of the Hobbit has problems, at least translated to film.

I wouldnt have agreed with Burts point about tacking the dragon into the third film being a cash grab, until you actually see it and realise the dragon is in the third film for a reported three minutes. That's all.
I think it's less a money grab than a really poor editiing decision.

Having mulled it over, i've decided i'll see this again.

But the biggest most criminal thing wrong with it is the ending. it's all over the place with no real substance given to any of the things that needed it.

Chiefly, Saruman. It's not explained or shown at all how he turns against them/comes into cahoots with Sauron.
and!
Sauron 'fleeing' is the most god awful poorly executed piece of crap you'll ever see on a screen.

The whole encounter at Dol Goldur should have been the real centerpiece to this film, if they truly wanted to link them to LOTR AND set up Sauron properly..they fail at this miserably..

oh god i could go on all day..this film is infuriating.

I like Radagast

I have never read the book though, so I don't know which parts of the movie are added on/bastardized.

I just want to know how many times in this movie someone is knocked down in battle, looks helplessly doomed, and then is saved by another character who stabs the villain in the back.

I'm guessing at least 30.

How geezerly does it make me that I'm kind of upset my theater doesn't have a pre-noon showing of this scheduled?

So this has been out for over a week here - and I'm still in no great hurry to see this. Maybe that's a sign

So do I. It's cheaper, and it doesn't eat up much of my day. And the audiences tend to be mostly old people, which means peace and quiet (usually).

Having worked in a movie theater for years, reading a statement like that, I can only assume you're the fapper in the back..comes to the early shows 'cos they're empty just to enjoy a danger jerk:)
amirite?
