Don't write my name on a stone
Bring a Coleman lantern and a radio
Cleveland game and two fishing poles
And watch with me from the shore

If you liked the MECo record, poke a little bit more around that time period—Didn’t It Rain was the album before, and What Comes After the Blues is after. Pyramid Electric Co is right in there as well, but it’s a solo album, not full-band.

He didn’t start producing for them until the MECo album, and then he produced the majority of their stuff after that. Didn’t It Rain was a live-in-studio recording like most of the stuff they did with Albini, though.

Speaking of that spectacular collaboration...

Will Johnson is getting the band back together. He and the remaining members of Magnolia Electric Co. are returning with new recordings as Magnolia & Johnson Electric Co. Prior to his death, the group worked closely with Ohio singer-songwriter Jason Molina. Today, they’ve shared a new version of “The Big Beast,” which was originally recorded by Molina and Magnolia Electric Co. They’ve also announced four shows in Texas this September.

I spoke with Jason Evans Groth on Twitter a few years ago and he confirmed for me that neither The Big Beast or The Last Three Human Words were ever recorded in the studio, they were live tracks only (Such Pretty Eyes for a Snake was recorded but has been lost). So this is the first recording they’ve ever done of it. You can really hear them letting it all hang out, the energy reminds me of their live shows around when I saw them. Excellent song to drive to.

Impala is getting a vinyl reissue this year: https://www.secretlystore.com/songs-ohi ... dium=email

This is the first recent reissue I’ll be skipping, I think, as I have the original 1998 pressing and the inclusion of one bonus track isn’t enough for me to open the wallet. Happy for everyone else to get this, though.
