Yeah, I kinda meant all of them together. There were a few, which is even better.

as much as i hate the prequels, they are cannon, and i'm glad they're trying to tie things together.

I've seen each of these films once, in theaters. Don't remember much from any of them. As a result, I tend to overcomplicate my understanding of plot points and minor characters when watching all subsequent Star Wars releases due to feeling like I missed out on a lot by not rewatching these flops.

I'm pretty sure I'm not in the minority here. How little of the prequel stuff can I get away with not seeing again if I still want to, say, re-watch Rogue One and really grasp the significance of a Jimmy Smits cameo?

the clone army was created to fight the separatists and their droid army. Turns out that the guy who becomes the emperor was behind both. The driod army gets shut down and the clone army becomes the military foundation of the empire, once palpatine gets elected chancellor of the republic, which he turns into the empire and starts shutting down older institutions.

Yeah that was one thing that annoyed me about R1. It was almost forced. They were about done with the meeting then he just appeared. It was weird.

He's one of the best things about the prequels

He was recruited by Count Dooku to lead the Separatist Droid Army. Like Stip said, the emperor (the one from the original trilogy) was actually behind both the droid army and the clone army, even if they were fighting each other in the Clone War. The Jedis did not know this, and fought on the side of the republic along with the clones and the worlds loyal to the republic. Eventually, when the droid army seemed to be on the verge of defeat (with Dooku, Grievous and others dead), the clones and Anakin turned on the jedi, massacring most of them. Meanwhile the emperor had received dictatorial powers in the senate, in an effort by the senate to win the war. In the end Yoda and Obi Wan had no choice but to flee. In the process however, they did save Luke and Leia and others.

Grievous was only a minor part of the total plan, but he was still a very skilled warrior and general, and personally killed several Jedi. An interesting character.

The prequels are about the fall of the jedi, the rise of Palpatine/Sideous and the life of Anakin Skywalker from child, to padawan, to jedi, to Darth Vader. The clone war is a prop and a tool.

A cool story, with some great scenes and memorable parts. Nevertheless the movies are obviously flawed, with a poorly executed romance, some throwaway characters taking too much space (esp Jar Jar), and some other poor choices (like the arena battle sequence in AOTC).

Wow, thanks. That's actually the most concise summary of that backstory I've ever read online. I gather the prequels get a bad rap because they don't portray any of that very well. (Palpatine and Sideous are the same guy?!)

In any case, I think I'll continue to skip the prequels and watch essential Clone Wars episodes. Thanks for your help, Anders.

Some things I would have liked to see / do differently in the prequels:

1) No kid actor for Anakin. Same actor all three movies.

2) No Qui Gon Jin. Just show Obi-Wan take Anakin in.

3) More onscreen dynamics and situations between Anakin and Obi-Wan. More mentoring scenes, training scenes, Clone War battle missions with the two of them.

4) Make Owen Anakin's real brother. Maybe start Episode 1 with a battle that tore Anakin's city / planet up, his parents are killed, Obi-Wan ask Anakin to join him as he senses the Force in him. Anakin's brother tells him not to join Obi-Wan on some dame fool idealistic crusade. Anakin leaves anyway.

5) Make Anakin's seduction of to the Dark Side more about power, and less about love. Anakin didn't train as a youngling, he's already like 20 years old. He chooses the "quick and easy" path of the dark side to maximize his powers.

6) No midichlorians (sp?). I mean, there is just no need for it.

7) No Jar Jar. Same as above.

8) No "chosen one" prophecy. Same as above.

9) More onscreen time with Palpatine / Anakin where Palps is duping him / planting seeds in his head.

10) Give it the SW feel. All the other movies feel like and tie in better with the SW universe. The prequels feel like completely different movies in a totally different galaxy.

11) Show more Alderaan. Show Bail there with a more prominent role. Maybe a meeting with him and Mon Motha? This way, when the planet explodes in ANH, we're a bit more emotionally attached to it.

12) Show Tarkin leading a Clone War battle, and give him a few scenes with Palpatine / Anakin.

13) Don't make Jedi sexless monks.

14) Show less traffic on Couracant (sp?) the city planet is just too distracting.

15) Less lightsaber fighting and no Yoda with a saber. He doesn't need it.

I'm sure there is more, but that's all I got for now.
