I'm not surprised that the BBWA embrassed itself once again, I'm just sad.

When there are more than ten legitimate options on the ballot, people who vote for guys like David Eckstein and Garrett Anderson probably shouldn't be allowed to vote anymore.

Even baseball "purists" need to recognize that this system is probably one of the most archaic and ridiculous in sports. And to the three people that didn't vote for Griffey, were they trying to make a statement? If so, they should probably not be allowed to vote either. Every year I get less and less pissed off about this and just laugh more and more at the whole thing.

Another fun fact: two of the voters who have revealed their ballots voted for Mark McGwire but not for Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens.

I saw one Boston writer bitching about how Edmonds fell off the ballot, and even though he's not a HOFer he deserved longer on the ballot. Essentially this guy voted for someone he doesn't think is a HOFer. The whole process is a joke.

Wtf? He was voting for a guy to be in the HOF, but not really, just to be on the ballot?

Yeah, and hes not alone, alot of them do it. I remember people saying the same thing last year about voting for Nomar just so he didnt fall off the ballot.

In defense of that practice, there have been times we're guys have started off without a lot of support who eventually were recognized as hall of famers. We look at things a lot differently now than most people did even just ten years ago, so in a sense I'm ok with people being unsure of guys and voting for them anyway just to keep the discussion going.

I don't have a problem with that, or even with leaving a sure bet off so you have a slot for someone deserving that doesn't have as much support. I do have a problem with wasting votes on people you don't think are HOFers. The goes for votes made to keep people on the ballot another year, and for votes given to guys that were polite to the media in their career but aren't HOFers.

I think the number of voters who think that way is probably pretty small. I would bet that most of them just genuinely believe that Edmonds deserves a couple years on the ballot before falling off. At least he has enough of a case that it makes sense to try to keep him on, though.

It's a joke that only two players are going in this year. It should be at least ten. And it's not like they're going to clear it up any time soon: next year, Manny, Vlad and Pudge join the ballot. Then Chipper, Thome, Rolen, and Andruw Jones. Then Rivera, Halladay, Helton and Pettitte. The 2020 class looks like a good chance to get rid of some of the backlog, but with Jeter as a slam dunk and Abreu as a borderline guy (who doesn't have the fun counting stats) they'll probably just make sure Jeter gets to go in alone out of re2pect.

I think all three of those guys will get in next year. Vladdy's numbers make him a borderline guy, but I think his reputation among guys who don't care about stats will be enough to get him in.

I guess I could see a Manny snub, based primarily on the PED stuff. I think he'll be close though, while Larry Walker, who pretty clearly has a better case, is just hanging around on the ballot with 15%.

Did they need the sympathy votes to stay on the ballot or were they pretty safe, though?

I just don't see Manny getting in while Bonds doesn't. Both are confirmed PED cases.

Maybe... I just think a lot of the Bonds/Clemens hate is built around the fact that they were assholes, and the PED thing is a nice and tidy way to keep them out. For some reason, I expect a lot of people to make excuses for Manny because he wasn't such a dick ("Well Manny was suspended, so he already served his sentence... Bonds and Clemens weren't caught while they were players, so we have to keep them out because this is the only way we can punish them!"

I don't know, I'm probably wrong (or at least I'm overestimating the number of voters who are complete morons) and Manny won't get that much support.
