Oh man, it might be the drink talking, but I'd prefer the next PJ album sound more like Pendulum and less like Got Some. I'm not sure Jack is the man for the job. Maybe they should go a radically different way (I fully realize I am about to get laughed off the board) but maybe T Bone Burnett or some other alt-country type? Someone who could dial back the Ed and dial up the band.
I love the song pendulum but wouldn't you agree the production leaves a lot to be desired? Someone like Jack might be able to not clean it up as much. It's a great tune in BOB's new production style.

Sloppy/tight = Slight.

I finally got an arrival date for this and it's going to be Wednesday 9/7; I feel like I'm going to be the last person in the hemisphere to get this.

Honestly, anyone other than Brendan is okay by me.

B'OB is bad, Rubin would be even worse.
To be clear, I don't think B'OB is bad. He's fine. We'll get more PRAMG albums. Those are all fine.
There are bits of Backspacer and Lightning Bolt that were really cool, but they're buried in classic rock albums.
I just want something really awesome. Groundbreaking. New. Original.

Are we still talking about Pearl Jam here?
I just want records that don't sound like complete junk.
KD in the No Code thread gets it:
Kevin Davis wrote:"No Code" sounds really nice, but to my ears it sounds more like the producer is just getting a good sound at the source and getting out of the way (Neil is a good comparison in that regard; that was basically David Briggs's entire philosophy). The actual manipulation of sound, to the extent that it's there, feels pretty unobtrusive, very much the opposite of the Brendan V2.0 records. I think the "amazing production" is really more a series of amazing band performances that the recording simply allows to happen.

If Bruce, Neil, and Bob Dylan can release really good, late career albums, why not Pearl Jam?

To an extent, those guys have all adapted to their limitations.

He hasn't released anything on par with his best work, but he's released albums that sound appropriate for where he is at this point in his career without completely sacrificing his basic sense of artistry. PJ flirts with that notion on occasion, but they always tend to swing too far in a single direction.
An album like "Riot Act" would feel really appropriate right now. "Lightning Bolt" sounds like a record by aging rock stars who are still gunning for top 40, and while that album has its share of solid tunes the whole gesture just doesn't resonate with any meaning.
Full disclosure: I think "Magic" is an upper-tier Springsteen album and think "Workin' On a Dream" totally deserves to exist.

Great music isn't necessarily the same thing as groundbreaking, new, original music.
In any event, I think (to an extent) it's easier for a solo artists to recover artistically than it is a band - they only have themselves to answer to. How many bands have fallen into a slump and then recovered? I can't think of many. It's hard to get four or five guys on the same page.
In these guys' case, I don't think they perceive themselves as being in a slump. I get the impression they think the early/mid 2000s was their slump and now they're riding high. Commercially, that's probably true, which probably helps cement that view.

It's puzzling, alright.
Stone's no slouch either, Moonlander had some really enjoyable moments.

Either the version I have of this is a really bad vinyl rip or the mix on this is terrible.
It sounds like the band are being broadcast through a transistor radio.
Dig that ol' timey vinyl warmth, eh kids.

This old timey mono booth sound is not my thing. I don't want to listen to pearl jam like I'm out in my grandpa's workshop reminiscing with him about the war efforts on the homefront. Or like I'm watching a bugs bunny cartoon where bugs is disguised as a vaudeville performer while Elmer Fudd sits in the audience not realizing a rabbit is pulling a fast one on him.
This really sucks

Nice LooneyTunes analogy...
I thought the OoS 7" was a great novelty, considering it would likely be reworked soon. The concert, however, sounds bad! Nothing definitive about this performance of OtE, except the cool little sounds toward the end. Being the homer that I am, there's a pretty damn good version from Denver '14... much better than this one.
