2 underwhelming songs out of 2, and the snippet we got from Something Special doesn't look great either.
I'll admit it, im underwhelmed by what i've heard so far. But Running, at least on paper, was always the red flag to me. I'm just hoping that my initial hunch was right that it was always going to be a bottom two song on this record for me.
Strong agree with the "always the red flag" notion. Same was true for me. That this song strikes me as a 3-star is ultimately a good sign for the record.

I don't know all the lyrics off the top of my head, and I recognize the title could indicate problematic content by today's standards, but "Give in to Me" is a song I still find amazing.

I know there is a lot of debate about production and I can see that if you compare these songs sonically against anything from the peak era. I still like these songs but I also feel like they sound like a version of Pearl Jam that exists in the Matrix. These songs won't hold up long term I don't think because they are devoid of anything emotionally significant. They will be fun workout driving playlist songs for a few months but I just really wish for the band that sounds like they are playing real drums and real guitars with simple production.

yea, im fully prepared to love this thing real hard fucking core over the summer and then ill just be legit fatigued by it and put it away. Its really brutal. Ed always likes it LOUD but this has been taken to a whole new level. I keep thinking about that quote from him saying to the band members "Just wait till you hear it"

If its loud, its awesome, for Ed. Seemingly.

I kid you not toward the end of Running I was like who would enjoy this noise? I actually like the song lyrically, Ed is not bad, but either I am old (yes) or hopefully a better-quality version will sort some of that out.

i recognize that you are broadly correct. my hearing is definitely not what it once was either. but the loudness/this hurts my ear complaint (which i believe is usually sincere if hyperbolic) is something i have never experienced. Maybe its like the cilantro gene?
