I heard this on the radio this weekend and (a) was very excited to hear it ad (b) was having a really hard time trying to remember the last time I heard a new Pearl Jam song played on the radio. Don't think I ever heard DotC on the radio. Doubtful anything from LB. Maybe The Fixer?

The day Dark Matter came out (seems so long ago now), when I got in my car after work I tuned in to the local rock radio station at the off chance of hearing it, and sure enough, what did I hear? Superblood Wolfmoon

I may have posted this earlier in this thread, but Severed Hand (Spotify BoB mix) came on shuffle this AM. I had pretty good headphones on, and I wished it sounded like Dark Matter. I could hear everything clearly (maybe clearer than DM) but I just wished everything was louder and had more presence. The DM mix isn't subtle. But it hits hard, and that's what I want in songs like this.

What are the strengths of a mix like Severed Hand compared to DM? Looking to learn, not argue.

You can always listen to the OG version of S/T if your want it LOUD.

yeah, but even then a lot of ST felt loud in a shrill way, rather than huge. For some songs that were intended to be abrasive (like the first 3) it works, but even with the original mix Severed Hand felt tame

Shrill is a better word for it, you're right.

Using DM as a reference track, i remastered Severed Hand to stips liking. HOpe this is what you are looking for!

I had never heard the 2017 mix of S/T and just checked out "Severed Hand." I haven't heard the original mix in so long that I couldn't tell you how this is different, but man is this performance ever dull compared to the live versions. S/T as a studio album is basically obsolete for me. 2006 tour boots all the way.

That said, I think the baseline S/T mix is just a more natural presentation of the band. It doesn't feel like there is a lot of polish and sparkle on the instruments. The drums sound like real drums, not studio-enhanced-processed drums. Neither recording sounds particularly pleasing from a compression/mastering standpoint though, and depending on your playback device I can imagine "Dark Matter" coming across as fuller and crisper than either S/T mix.
