Best known for playing Falconetti in the first miniseries broadcasted on American television, 1976's Rich Man, Poor Man, Smith's tough-guy notoriety rose to prominence after he fought Clint Eastwood in 1980's Any Which Way You Can, and brawled with Rod Taylor in 1970's Darker Than Amber — during which Taylor actually broke three ribs.

Not only was Smith an actor, but he was a bodybuilder, UCLA champion discus thrower, arm-wrestling and boxing champion and martial arts black belt holder too.

The six-foot-two (approx. 188 centimetres) action star was known for being able to do 5100 sit-ups — continuously — and 74-kilogram reverse-curls with his 46-centimetre biceps.

Although Smith had 289 acting credits on Internet Movie Database to his name, he did leave Hollywood — a career which he first started as a child actor in the 1940s — when he enlisted in the Army to fight in the Korean War, before returning to star in cult biker films Run, Angel, Run!, The Losers, Angels Die Hard, C.C. & Company, Chrome and Hot Leather, Gentle Savage, Eye of the Tiger.
