it’s really great. Cold War is worth seeing, toobart wrote:I went into this thinking I was gonna hate it since the synopsis is about as close to “generic euro art film” as possible, but it ended up being one of my favorite movies that yearAnders wrote:Ida

Re: What movies are you watching?
Finished this. It did have a lot going for it. Excellent performances by the two leads, very bleak (on purpose) cinematography, and in general a strong story. In the end, I wish they had done a little more with the story, but it does seem a lot of others liked it:Anders wrote:Ida
Ida won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, becoming the first Polish film to do so. It had earlier been selected as Best Film of 2014 by the European Film Academy and as Best Film Not in the English Language of 2014 by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). In 2016, the film was named as the 55th best film of the 21st century, from a poll of 177 film critics from around the world.

My wife thought it (Ida) was boring, so I had to finish it by myself today. But I did enjoy. I’m sure it will stick in my memory a long time.Malloy wrote:it’s really great. Look, I'm sorry I couldn't watch Babylon okay. My friend lives in another country and I never get to see her. I'm sure I'll watch it somedayAnders wrote:The Selfish Giant

This seems to be universally loved, but I thought it was just ok. Fairly straightforward story.Anders wrote:The Selfish Giant

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Babylon is one of the most impressive films I've ever seen. I don't usually care about the technical element of film making, but I found myself thinking "how the fuck did they do that?/how many takes did that require?/how expensive was this shit?" throughout.
Also, the music. Good lord. Hook it up to my veins.

Joe Vs. The Volcano was very entertaining; funny, clever. Hanks is so charismatic. Meg Ryan plays 3 parts very well. I'd recommend it. 7.8/10 orange sodas.
