I like Ed but there isn't a lot about Pearl Jam that is anti-establishment. At their core, they're a mainstream, popular arena rock band. Ed's influences pre-Pearl Jam are about as mainstream as it could possibly get (The Who, The Beatles, Springsteen, U2, etc).

It wasn't until he got shamed about PJ being too corporate that he started championing bands like Fugazi, The Frogs, etc that had no connection to his musical style or influences.

It's actually refreshing now that he doesn't have to pretend to dislike Taylor Swift because he's afraid of what some douchewagon like Kurt Cobain is going to think. And ironically, Cobain was only annoyed because PJ was surpassing Nirvana's popularity. Ed, albeit with good intentions, exhibited some major follower behavior by caving in to the criticism vs. just being who he is (or was).

Indie music in the 80’s felt like it had much more in common with the whole-cloth inventionism and “build it from scratch” jumpstarts of the 60’s than hair metal and other 80’s rock styles did. If you liked The Who’s destructive urgency and Neil Young’s “one take in a barn” approach to authenticity, it seems like the most inviting musical pocket for you at that time. It also was a hotbed of exactly his type of personal politics and it had a sense of community, so it probably made for a welcoming place.

Of course, once you start to identify with a community, those are generally the people whose approval you are going to be most concerned with.

Somebody needs to shut these Swift haters down.

I don't get people's infatuation with Dave A.
He's just an average drummer. Like thousands out there with the same skillset.
People went bonkers over his upload of Go the drumming in which is NOTHING to write home about.
It's very basic stuff, really.

Jack Irons was a standout drummer.
Danny Carey is a standout drummer.
Or Jason Nekrutman.
Dave A is just your average garage band level of performer.
Nothing would change with his return to PJ.
They used to be a riff and bass driven rock band blessed with having a heavyweight of a solo guitarist in McCready and a snarling, growling baritone behemoth in Vedder. Now they are... I really don't know, what.

The band moved on for reasons we don't know and I wouldn't invite any kind of tension back in to a relationship that simply didn't work.

Awful take. Dave wasn’t Hercules, but there was a bounce to his playing that the rest of the band played off of, and they’ve not had it since (and I prefer their chemistry with Jack)

He's right about the last point though
