I wish Rey's arc was better, that Starkiller Base was handled in a different way, and there is something about Han's role in this, that missed something essential. But, I like The Force Awakens. It's flawed, similar to how the prequels are flawed, but it certainly feels like a Star Wars movie, and a continuation of the story from the OT. And that's very important.
I disagree very much of course
Yes, I know. For me the red line was TLJ, but with JJ back for TROS, I am hopeful and optimistic, that he will make a proper and solid end to the Skywalker Saga.
If I wanted that I would have stopped at ROTJ!!!!!!!
It was a fitting end, but it’s not the end anymore.
and george lucas, himself, stated he always thought it was a 9 part saga.....

where I'm nervous is that I am less interested in the conclusion to the nine part saga, and more interested in the conclusion to the new trilogy - and to an extent those will be working at cross purposes.
Hopefully JJ pulls it off. He's a good choice to try and strike that balance.

Kylo Ren will die, and to our knowledge the Skywalker bloodline is then extinct.
The Skywalker brand will go on, both IRL and in stories (prequels and sequels).

Only we now know that Leia and Han had a kid. Luke felt betrayed by their kid, and went to a remote island. The kid then killed Han. After helping the rebellion in the fight against him, Luke then became a force ghost. Meanwhile the new republic was destroyed by the evil First Order. Cue new heroes Rey, Poe, Finn and Rose, with Lando making a comeback.

The Empire Strikes Back. The sequel to the mega hit Star Wars from 1977.
No nostalgia call backs (unless you count the Jabba the Hutt comment, but that's more character building than anything)
Pushes the story forward into new territory.
Not similar to the first movie.
So making a good sequel can be done. It just hasn't happened in Star Wars since then.

30+ years from the time ROTJ ends until the TFA starts up, and 30+ years of gathering story ideas at LFL. A few years of deep story ideas with JJ Abrams and Co. and this is what they come up with? A bigger death star?
That's a travesty (cinematically speaking).
"They had to pull fans back in." Eff that. There have been SW fans for 40+ years. They have conventions for SW. They have dozens of podcasts and hundreds of fan sites. Thousands of people are invested in SW in 2015. You don't need to pull fans back in.

Ok. There hasn't been decent sequels since ESB and ROTJ

(And even ROTJ rehashes the death star)
