People seem to liken these songs back to favorite earlier classics. I'm guessing that is the energetic of the songs but I'm hoping it means there's cool riffs and not just straight power chord fast punk rock

Agree. Punk might be easier for Ed to sing now but groove has always been what sets them apart.

And there will be a ballad called Something Special. There will be some fast songs, some slow songs, and songs in between. It will be like Earthling you will see.
