I agree with that. Even under George's soul-sucking direction, he still refused to go lifeless. With decent writing, he would probably even have been lauded.
But one of the things that makes Obi-Wan engaging in the original series to me is that he was this person of almost limitless potential, who had to sacrifice most of that potential by hiding out on a desert planet because he failed to save his friend. Whatever good he could have done the universe is lost...no heroic adventures, no great victories. No lives saved. Just...hiding. Getting old. It's an important part of the starting point of that movie...the reason having a new hope is important is because there is no hope. And then Obi-Wan gets the chance to do right again, by committing a sacrifice that can ignite that hope.
The extent that you rewrite it as "This dude's been just kicking the holy shit out of evil and adventuring it up in the desert all these years" is the extent to which he starts to become less interesting of a character, to me.
Or, to put it another way, for the love of all things stop writing about the same nine people over and over again.

yup. While this is about the only flashback story I'd want to see, McP's not wrong. Although I suppose some of this would depend on how the series ends.

I guess you're right, but it just bugs me because it's unnecessary retconning. When you throw something in in the last five minutes of the movie--"She died, no kids!" / "Have these droids' memories erased"--it just reeks of sloppy story-telling.
While it's true that Vader never knew, it's still completely stupid that Luke is sent to grow up on the same planet. Wouldn't they have at least changed his name!?!

I'm not too interested in existing characters flashback stories for the most part. Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing a Palpatine rise. Or better yet, before him with the movie ending where Palps becomes a Sith. Like a "Rise Of The Sith" type of move or something along those lines. I mean, before The Phantom Menace, I had never heard of a Sith, and I thought Lucas really screwed up by not going more in depth about it. Honestly, Episode 1 should have been "Rise of the Sith", and thus tying in more with Episode 3 "Revenge of the Sith". I don't know, but I felt "Sith" was just thrown at us and we (normal, non nerds) were supposed to know all this stuff about them. That there is one of my biggest problems with the movie. It really should have focused on Palpatine and his rise to power, not so much on Anakin and a stupid pod race.

But seriously, I'd love to see some Sith Wars films. Exar Kun might be my favorite villain in the previous SW "canon."
