Vanilla Sky. Why do I listen to some of you? Are you proud of yourself? Tricking an innocent boy into watching a Cameron Crowe movie? Was it worth it? Did you get a big laugh? This fucking sucks.

Re: What movies are you watching?
I still think Elizabethtown is the worst movie I've ever seen but this really fucking tried to replace it. I give it an F for effort.

Re: What movies are you watching?
I will say this: Tom Cruise is one photogenic mofo, and Cameron Diaz has a face built for standard definition video only.

Re: What movies are you watching?
Great things about Vanilla Sky:
- Great performances from everyone in the cast
- Incredible soundtrack (John Coltrane, Todd Rundgren, Jeff Buckley, lots of Radiohead, lots of Sigur Ros)
- Gorgeous original score by Nancy Wilson (I love the "Elevator Beat" recurring motif)
- Appropriately dreamy, golden hued cinematography by the legendary John Toll
- Endlessly quotable, with a lot of fun one-liners
- Actually really funny throughout, never loses its sense of humor
- That intense moment near the end with Tom Cruise yelling for tech support as "Good Vibrations" reaches its climax
- It works as a poignant and affecting exploration of loneliness, isolation, and the pursuit of romantic fulfillment via fantasy
- Also about the power of pop culture iconography to shape our individual narratives
- I'm gonna mention the soundtrack again because it really is great
Bad things about Vanilla Sky:
- It gets very explainy at the end. I love the elevator scene because of the Spiritalized song that accompanies it, but I wish it trusted the audience more.
- They cut a cool scene near the end with David Aames going on a shooting spree at the Life Extension building.
- The love story gets a little precious at times, but it works when you realize where it's taking place and what purpose it serves.
One of my favorite movies, and a great example of a remake completely obliterating the original in every way
