Air.

It was merely ok. Nothing surprising, almost no conflict here. I liked the framing and how it looked, straight from an 80s movie. Affleck was so funny...Damon is always good, but it wasnt a great movie.

Just ok.

Brothers

Norwegian documentary, filmed over 8 years by their mother. It’s a bit like Boyhood, just a documentary. It’s both too invasive in their life, and doesn’t go far enough. Just ok really.

Amy

«A documentary on the life of Amy Winehouse, the immensely talented yet doomed songstress. We see her from her teen years, where she already showed her singing abilities, to her finding success and then her downward spiral into alcoholism and drugs.»

This one is excellent. Highly recommended, seem it twice now.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Watching this now.

An early humorous film, just like the first one. Doesn’t reach high heights for me, but I quietly enjoy it just enough for it to be worth it.

I'm watching Flesh + Blood. Pretty grim so far, but I'm enjoying it.

Running With Our Eyes Closed

The Jason Isabell documentary on HBO. Really moving and week made. Highly recommend it.

AIR is a dazzling display of production design that expends a lot of energy trying to hide the fact that it's a movie about marketing with very little in the way of conflict or stakes. Going into it I thought it might touch on the commodification of aspiration but it wasn't even concerned with that -- its scope is just super narrow. So much so that it ends up feeling kind of pointless, even if you do feel like you've been decently entertained for 2 hours. Ben Affleck is really hilarious, I loved him in this. I'm not sure I liked the movie around him that much.

I kept hearing that the DnD movie was good so I went to see it, and it was...okay? Pretty cute little movie that you forget 5 minutes after you leave the theater, but at least it was well made and didn't suffer from the plague of what passes for modern writing. Plus Chris Pine elevates everything he's in.

Also saw John Wick 4. I love how delightfully stupid this franchise is. Keanu is just perfect. That said this one wasn't as good as 3. The dog guy didn't work too well, and he had the same gimmick as the woman in 3, only less cool. I also don't care for when it gets too choreographed or "dancy", but usually the violence works.

I might just watch part 1 now.

Also watched that Denzel Washington Magnificent 7. That was dumb, but in a bad way. Generic trash.

This is a much better review than I'd expect. Maybe I should look at it after all.
