i also think the lyrics are pretty forced and most of the time all too direct.

Gigaton has so many great "moods".

and lots of nuance in Eddie's performances.

Gigaton in particular was one of Eddie's strongest lyrical outings in a good long while.

Aside from there just being too many lyrics on some songs, I think it's pretty indisputable that Ed is a strength of Gigaton, and with Gigaton being a strong album, that's saying a lot.

relative to other singers his age, Ed is still pretty much a powerhouse, but we'll still carry on comparing him to singers thirty years younger

I don't actually think it's that big a deal but it can lead to live issues. Gigaton has a lot of wordy songs. Off the top of my head, WES, SBWM, Never Destination, Comes then Goes.

Who Ever Said and Comes than Goes are both long songs, though. It's not like SBWM or Never Destination where the words do tumble over each other (although ND is the only one of these songs that's fast to the point of being a challenge to sing). Is that an issue with the length of the song? Do folks just want more strumming breaks on Comes than Goes?

Oh for sure he still has an incredible voice. My issue isn't his voice, but his delivery. I know that sounds weird saying it out loud.

I love long songs but I think if I really have to pick the nit here, it's that yeah, I'd like some more instrumental sections, mostly just because this is a fucking GREAT band that plays really creatively when given those chances.

Well that is true, but the lyrics are the feature, not a bug. They aren't crowding out the music. They aren't rushed to fit the structure. It's deliberately paced and designed to support the lyrics in a way that a song like, say, Never Destination isn't.

Is the issue literacy?

the acoustic guitar-playing in CTG is a million times more interesting than a lot of recent Ed ballads, tbf

Except that part that is like “Cohhhhhhh-WHA-unmmmmmmms, then goesssssssss”

I mean I get a critique that someone might think Comes than Goes is just too long. I think the endings of WMA and Not For You wear out their welcome and you lose interest in what's going on. But that seems like a different issue than folks thinking Eddie's become too wordy.

But then again the lyrics are an important part of my experience with the band's music. To me this is like saying the guitarists are playing too many notes. What matters is whether or not they are interesting notes, and fit the structure of the song they are in. Not just that there is too much of it
