Tom is a wannabe filmmaker and decides he wants to take the opportunity to make a documentary about the band, but he just fucking sucks on every level. It becomes instead a documentary about this really lonely guy, with huge potential, who simply let every opportunity pass him by, and his resentment towards his brother's success. It's a sweet, sad, often laugh-out-loud hilarious and always poignant story about disappointment and anger, with The National and their music as a framing device. I'm not the biggest National fan ever, but this is one of the greatest documentaries I've ever seen.
So it's basically "American Movie" but with The National?

Heading to the shows in Chicago this week (3 out of 4). Should be fun.

Only thing that sucks is they don't mix up their setlists; maybe they will for a 4 night stand.

When I saw them on back-to-back nights in 2010 they did a pretty good job of mixing up the setlists. The core of the set was the same (songs from High Violet), but on the first night we got Start A War, Secret Meeting, Baby We'll Be Find, and All The Wine, and on the second night we got Brainy, Racing Like A Pro, The Geese of Beverly Road, Vanderlyle, Cherry Tree, and About Today. Out of the five times I've seen them, these were by far the best.
But I haven't seen them since TWFM came out, so can't speak to that tour.

This has always been my biggest beef with this band. They have so many good songs, and they seem to stick with the same 20 songs per night, and only change maybe 2-3 songs.

I saw the doc a few weeks ago too. It was fantastic. Humiliation is a top 3 National song. By far the best album of 2013 also.

Although, maybe top 5 is more reasonable.

I've seen them a lot, but tonight's show was among the best. They are a well-oiled machine by now. About Today was ridiculously good. Lemonworld was pretty rough though. Matt climbed right over me during Mr. November. All in all, great show.

1. Don't Swallow the Cap
2. I Should Live in Salt
3. Sorrow
4. Bloodbuzz Ohio
5. Sea of Love
6. Hard to Find

8. Afraid of Everyone
9. Conversation 16
10. I Need My Girl
11. This Is the Last Time
12. Ada ("Chicago" by Sufjan Stevens as outro)
13. Lemonworld
14. Abel
15. Slow Show
16. Pink Rabbits
17. England
18. Graceless
19. About Today
20. Fake Empire

To be semi-fair it is still an album tour, but I agree mixing the sets would be nice; however, that's just not this band.

Also, surprisingly, this was the first non-festival stop on this tour in Chicago.
