Tuolumne wrote:"Incisions made by scalpel, blades of time." Absolutely Devastating.
This is the 1994 lyrical talent of EV shining through, but written through the lens of words only a person grown into middle age can write.
It's a complicated song. There's sadness, but there's also anger, resignation, and regret.
That whole section is perfect
Where you been, can I find
A glimpse of my friend
Don’t know where or when one of us left
The other behind
Divisions came and troubles multiplied
Incisions made by scalpel blades of time

I was expecting a farewell song, and we got something way much better. Its up there with his best work ever.

Absolutely love this song. Probably my favorite Ed song since he went on that tear with Vitalogy and No Code. Makes me think of the character from Off He Goes looking back on his relationships and life with 25 years of maturity.

too bad we didn't each have a copy of this song to listen to when we parted ways at the tipi
I’d still be crying

Been listening to this one since the album came out--as a critic of a lot of the post-Riot Act output, I am pleased to say I love this song. Definitely see the Parting Ways comparisons; I even hear some Temple of the Dog in this. It's focused and touching, the lyrics are delicate and sophisticated in a way a lot of the modern-era ballads aren't. The melody is legitimately beautiful, the arrangement is spare and restrained. Completely caught me off guard.
