This Australia talk is boring
Between the regions that touch on the North Coast, what would have been most helpful in the case of of a Japanese invasion? Ports, oil, railroads, etc.Birds in Hell wrote:I've prepared this handy guide for future reference:
I know it was indentured servitude in some US colonies. That system was in place to take British convicts and still makes those instances penal colonies...simple schoolboy wrote:The first colonies were backed by investment companies. Then, followed by additional colonies of puritans and other religious minorities. What penal colonies do you refer to? There were many indentured servants who paid off their transit through a term of service, but I don't think that indicates they were necessarily prisoners in England or elsewhere.Citizen Dick wrote:When I lived in the US it was always a bit surprising how many Americans would use convict jokes as some kind 'hur, hur' burn, without realising America was used as a penal colony by the Brits first.
Like... losing the US colonies is literally the reason they chose to settle Australia with convicts.
The British used colonial North America as a penal colony through a system of indentured servitude. Merchants would transport the convicts and auction them off (for example) to plantation owners upon arrival in the colonies. It is estimated that some 50,000 British convicts were sent to colonial America and the majority landed in the Chesapeake Colonies of Maryland and Virginia. Transported convicts represented perhaps one-quarter of all British emigrants during the 18th century.
Sorry Burt. I like you and all but I won't take this trade.BurtReynolds wrote:If Australia legalizes guns, I'll move there.

Right, but there was concern over that possibility. Sorry for triggering your inferiority issues. I'll try and be more considerate of your delicate constitution in future.
Not certain why you have such a problem with me though numbers. I was making comment about the US corona stimulus in the corona stimulus thread. Sorry?

Not wanting to play devil's advocate here, but didn't the big players who have come out with the vaccine not receive any of that stimulus package?96583UP wrote:sorry about your relatives houseHiggs wrote:I guess I'm too dumb to even know what you're talking about here?
