The surgery went well and she was coherent the next day or two, but they moved her to rehab Wednesday and she's been delusional af and they won't start therapy.
After a few weeks of on and off coherence and therapy, she got a cold that turned into pneumonia and then a UTI. May be on her last legs.
Sorry, pal.

Thanks, bro. If she makes it through this hopefully she agrees to go into a nursing home.

Lately I've been thinking about what's going to happen when people in my family start to die. My parents are 60, so hopefully that's still a long way off for them, but I still have three living grandparents. I haven't seen any of them in a loooooong time, but I imagine I will be expected to fly out to the funerals, and I'm kind of dreading the weirdness of all that. I have so little connection to any of my extended family anymore, and I really don't want to see my brother (I cut contact with him about a year ago). I dunno. Just really not looking forward to having to go back there but I guess I should.

You won’t be going back for your brother, but for your grandparents.

But even that is weird because I haven't had any contact with two of them for, I dunno, 15+ years? And not much more than that with the third. Not really on purpose, just kinda turned out that way.

I wish I had gone to more funerals, though most of the time I only found out somebody died weeks after the fact.

You can remedy that

Ehh, it's kind of a weird situation and I'm not sure I really want to "remedy" anything. My main memory of my grandpa is him repeatedly ribbing me about "getting fat" when I was an anorexic teenager, which led to me avoiding him. I tried recently to talk a bit with my paternal grandma and it didn't really go anywhere.

I'm sick of being the only one putting any effort into familial relationships. Done with that.

My 76 yo mom has cancer, seems treatable.

My 68 yo mom in law is in the hospital with diverticulitis.

My bro in law’s 70 somehing mom has congestive heart failure and is declining.

Just fucked.

What a rough stretch. Are you and your BiL close?

I’ve been crashing at my mom’s condo for a week and a half, helping her out as she recovers from surgery. Getting her to all sorts of appointments to prep for radiation therapy in a few weeks as well. Cancer rollercoaster.

My BIL’s mom found out today her only option is open heart surgery in a few weeks, so they’re all processing that.

At least my MIL seems good. She moved into our place while I’m away to help out with the kid.

Fun times. BIL and I are getting wings and beers tomorrow night to blow off some steam.

Been doing a lot of cleaning when I’m here. Before I leave, probably going to have the talk with my mom about basic housekeeping and cleanliness, and is it too much now. Ugh.

Not saying she has to move into a facility, but there are support options beyond just cleaners coming every other week and doing a half assed job. And stop buying food in bulk, it all just expires.
