NEWS! The Rey Skywalker New Jedi Order #StarWars movie, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy still attached to direct, reportedly has a new writer (via @THR).

George Nolfi, whose solo writing credits include Oceans 12, The Adjustment Bureau, and The Banker, will take his shot.

Interesting, Andy Greenwald said on The Watch today that this movie won't happen.

Who is he? Is he working or formerly working on it?
He's a writer/critic. He was part of the original team with Damon Lindelof.
Gotcha.
His wouldn’t be an untinged view fair to say?
He and those lads do have a bit of an axe to grind.
He's a smart dude with a lot of experience and insight. He's also super connected and has been a head writer/showrunner before. I usually listen when he says these things. But he does very clearly harbor some ill will about the way Damon's team's pitch went sideways. And he's very vocal about not caring about Star Wars anymore outside of Andor.

He and Chris (co-host of The Watch) are both kinda over it but also kinda pumped to see Ryan Gosling. Though both dislike Levy as a filmmaker. So, they're all over the map with this stuff. It's mostly just opinions. But Andy usually has some insight. We'll see what happens. I'm still super excited for "The Rey Movie." I hope it happens.

It's called The Watch. They cover (mostly) TV. I actually really like the hosts quite a bit (usually). Lately, Andy has been pissy about a lot of stuff. But they have good insights most of the time and it's usually a fun pod. It can be hit/miss, like everything. Even when I disagree, I usually like hearing them chat.

Their Star Wars and Severance opinions aside.

I love the pod but I haven't listened to it in quite some time. We just don't have the time to watch much TV or movies these days.

A terminally online audience who uses YouTube videos to tell them what to think, can’t have helped.

Many of them here funnily enough.

Newly appointed writer of Rey film George Nolfi officially talked about the film in an interview with FilmStories:
“The way I approach it is, you look at what’s come before you, you look at the broad ideas of what they want to do,” Nolfi said. “Meaning: Lucasfilm, Disney, Sharmeen [Obaid-Chinoy], the director, and then you do what a writer does, and try to try and put beats of a story together. Try and imagine characters, and then you present that with an understanding that it needs to honour, obviously, a long, incredible tradition.
"If you think about George Lucas, the six movies that he did, and the universe that he created, it’s actually very steeped in broad notions of politics,” Nolfi said. “It’s not talking about today, per se, but there’s the Empire’s Nazism slash Roman Empire. The democracy of the Roman Empire collapsing and becoming an empire and the perennial story of human beings organising themselves and against chaos, and then the tools that help human societies tamp down on chaos becomes oppression.
"So that is really very core to what I think George Lucas was trying to talk about. And one of the wonderful things about science fiction and Star Wars – which is more almost science fantasy or space opera – is that you can raise the deepest issues without it feeling like a philosophy class, or a political science class, or something I read in the newspaper today…
“It can be about real things, deep things.”

“Politics and messaging on current events has no place in Star Wars!”

Remember Star Wars was written as a mirror to the pointless horror of Vietnam and the evils of colonialism and military imperialism and domination anywhere.

“Well fuck George Lucas and anyone thinks like him!”

Fine. Stop watching Star Wars and fuck off.

Is that true, or was that just a reading of the material? I'm honestly asking because I've never heard this before.

It is true. It’s the first truth. He rewrote it when all that kicked off (he rewrote it several times) but the one we ended up with was about all that
Great episode of history hit about it here. This lady wrote a book about it and Lucas even collaborated

I tell a lie. She compiled a book about Star Wars and history and it’s a bunch of essays by academics about history’s influence on Star Wars. Now I have to get a copy.

Summary:At last-an analysis of the historical patterns that influenced the creation and storyline of the Star Wars sagaStar Wars took place long ago in a galaxy far, far away, but its epic stories are based on our own history. From Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire to the French Revolution and the Vietnam War, Star Wars and History explores the major historical turning points, heroes, and villains in human history and their impact on the creation of the Star Wars saga. Star Wars and History shows how the atomic and hydrogen bombs led to the Death Star; how Princess Leia's leadership in the Rebel Alliance resembled the daring work of intrepid women in the French Resistance during World War II and the Mexican Revolution; historical parallels between the Jedi Code and Bushido as well as those linking the Jedi culture with that of the Templar Knights and other warrior monks; and all of the history that underlies the Star Wars galaxy. Read how our own civilization's civil wars, slavery, international corporation states, and teenage queens were transformed into the epic Star Wars history and discover how Tatooine reflects the lawless frontiers of the past and Coruscant our own history of glittering and greedy capitals. The first book devoted to analyzing the actual historical events in our past that influenced the creation of the space fantasy, Star Wars Features 12 essays by a wise "council" of history scholars, written in close collaboration with George Lucas and Lucasfilm Gives new insights into central Star Wars characters and historical figures who helped inspire them (including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Queen Amidala, Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, Lando Calrissian, Emperor Palpatine, and others) Includes both stunning photos from the Lucasfilm Image Archives and historical photos that demonstrate the parallels between both worlds Filled with fascinating historical comparisons and background that will take your experience of the Star Wars saga to a new level, Star Wars and History is an essential companion for every Star Wars fan"
