Riot Act's a pretty good album. I think there are some subtle hints of the shit sound to come, but they hadn't yet fully committed to it.

It's still better to group it with Binaural than the Post Riot Act Moneygrab.

RA is an uneven album. There's some really great music that shows that band exploring the creative boundaries of its sound (Can't Keep, Cropduster). And, there's some low points (Get Right, TMW) that kind of bring the pacing of the album down. However, these low points don't suffer from the "schlock factor" that permeates through some of the more recent albums.

Listen to the way Ed sung on Indifference, and listen to the way Ed sung on Getaway. BOB said that "Ed really sung the hell out of this album." For me, that was the main problem. Ed needs to be more subdued in his singing. His voice should just be another instrument in the band.

I think EC sounds really good on almost everything but I agree he is too far out in front. If nothing else, keeping him more subdued in the mix makes it possible for high points in the songs to be break out moments

I totally agree with this, and that it's reached its most problematic with Lightning Bolt.

Agreed. I love to death how he sounds during the final verse, but it's mixed too much like a continuation of what came before. Sirens and getaway are also major offenders. He's also just too loud in future days, even though he sounds real good

I was confused early this week when in the span of 2 hours I heard sirens and really liked it and then heard living on a prayer and really hated it

Riot Act has been my most-listened-to Pearl Jam album for the last couple of years. Probably my favourite of them all at the moment.
