So it looks like it came in about 50th for me...still easily within 100. Although I didn't count theatrical stuff (Alice & Blood Money would surely have several each) and I didn't count compilations (minus Falling Down on Big Time, and there'd be plenty of stuff on Orphans), but I still don't see it falling outside the top 100.

what an odd debate.
Songs that might be better than TTB:
Martha
San Diego Serenade
Romeo is Bleeding
Mr. Seigel
On the Nickel
16 shells
Singapore
Clap Hands
gun Street girl
Time
Cold cold ground
Just the Right Bullets
Black Wings
Hold On
Come on Up to the House
the part you throw away
how it's gonna end
Make it rain
Tell me
new years day
chicago
hell broke luce
fall of troy
walk away
all the time
long way home
widow's grove
so that's 27 songs that might be better. I'm not sure if any of them are.

Regardless, I sure do like the jibber of your jabber.
There were a few songs...especially on the early records and Rain Dogs...that I deleted just before posting my list. That may have been an error on my part. There were also some on records like swordfish and Mule that I gave Traubert the benefit of the doubt on, where I (again) probably shouldn't have. So I guess it makes the proverbial top 100, but somewhere in the 80-100 range. My bad.
so that's 27 songs that might be better. I'm not sure if any of them are.
Apparently, you consider Romeo is Bleeding to be a better song that Swordfishtrombone, though....so I wouldn't waste a gallon on you, out there.

Look, these are both great songs, but Romeo is Bleeding is one of the most absurdly badass songs I've heard

It's all the bad parts of early Tom Waits condensed into a single sickeningly saccharine Billy Joel facsimile.

Listen I love San Diego Serenade. I mean, I love it. It's one of those songs that really strikes a chord with me in a big way and is one of the big reasons I kept hitching down that Tom Waits highway. It will always have a special place in my heart.
Tom Traubert's Blues is better. Though, I may never have found it without San Diego Serenade.

Yeah, it probably is...but it's not better than the other ones I listed off of Heart of a Sat Night.

The only Heart of Saturday Night song I may prefer to "Tom Traubert's Blues" is "Drunk on the Moon", but I love that song more than most people I've talked to.

Song I like more than Tom Traubert's Blues (by album):
Heartattack and Vine
16 Shells
Tango Till Their Sore
Time
Falling Down
Earth Died Screaming
Who Are You
Whistle Down the Wind
Hold On
Filipino Box Spring Hog
Come On Up To The House
God's Away on Business
Another Man's Vine
Starving in the Belly of a Whale
The Part You Throw Away
Alice
Hoist That Rag
Don't Go Into That Barn
Trampled Rose
Make It Rain
Chicago
Hell Broke Luce
New Year's Eve
2:19
Buzz Fledderjohn
Never Let Go
So, looks like TTB would be in my top 30.

This one is the closest from 'Heart' to beating out TTB, for me.

Drunk on the Moon is brilliant. But I don't like it more than TTB.
