God, I love that movie.
Its amazing. Its so-so good...i need to watch it again.
I have this in my queue...I need to bump it up.
DO IT
I loved it, though not as much as
Blue Velvet.
Also, relating to
Twin Peaks, (spoilers for both)
- Spoiler: show
- The Mystery Man=Bob--especially early in the movie, before Dayton replaces Madison--the whole "I don't go where I'm not invited," Madison walking into the black and returning evil,...
Good grab.

Seriously, David Lynch, what the fuck was that?
Brilliant, is what it was. Horrific, unexpected and masterfully brilliant.
Well then maybe you can tell me what the hell was going on in the plot.
pondering this question is making me like the movie even more.

Sorta want to watch Mulholland Dr since it's on Netflix, but I feel like I should wait for Lost highway to settle before delving into another Lynch. Any other suggestions for streaming from Netflix?

it's just, most all the people i regularly hang out with seem to be opposed to watching foreign films. their excuses are really lame.
the best movies i have watched on Netflix have been foreign.
I Saw the Devil
Mother
The Man From Nowhere
Aftershock
Flame and Citron (still one of my favorite movies)

three and five aren't netflix anymore, but added devil and mother to the instant q.
But I can understand opposition to foreign films to some degree. Three things that immediately come to mind: The time your eyes spend on the words is time not spent on the rest of the scene, it can be hard to decipher exactly where inflection is located within sentences (and simply having to do that takes time away from noticing other things), and some words or phrases can't really be translated or lose power in the process.

In that regard I reckon growing up in Colombia watching subtitled American movies helped me get used to the process of quickly scanning the scene and reading the words at the same time. I don't find it nearly as inconvenient as many of my American friends do.

I don't find it very inconvenient either. I used to when I was younger. But then I turned 18 and realized I was missing out on a lot of great cinema. I decided it was time to get the fuck over it. And, really, it only took like three films for the subtitles to stop being an obstacle.

But, in movies where I can actually speak the language and don't need subtitles, I find that they get in the way. Because I live in Buenos Aires, English-language films are subtitled and I find myself annoyed that my eyes are being diverted towards those blotchy eyesores at the bottom of the frame.
I wish they always did what they sometimes do in film festivals: have the subtitles projected onto a separate field right underneath the screen, rather than on the print.

You what's annoying? Watching Star Trek in Spanish. Because they don't leave the Klingons speaking Klingon and put Spanish subtitles; they change the Klingon language to Spanish and put English subtitles.

I find that I only "notice" them for the first few minutes and then I just kinda read them without really thinking about it. I watch a lot of foreign films though. The funny thing is that I need subtitles for most of the UK movies I watch (i.e. Fish Tank, Red Road, Kill List) because I cannot understand a damn thing people are saying with certain English/Scottish/Irish accents. I was actually watching The White Ribbon the other day and realized I knew enough German to judge the little details of the subtitles, so that was cool.

Probably not his best. But I'm a HUGE fan of his work overall. I think he's brilliant.
Yeah, I really liked it. It's quiet and quirky and really, really funny. The tone is off-beat. Honestly, the movie misses the mark a bit more than I'd like. It's worth watching, but not in a "run right out immediately!" kind of way.
I laughed out loud more than a few times and I love how Solondz masterfully mines awkwardness. Unravels a bit at the end, but the final scenes are equally hilarious and heartbreaking. They make it well worth the journey.
