"Theme with Noise" sounds more mature than so much of what they were releasing on SST around that time, doesn't it? This sort of hazy textural stuff is my favorite kind of thing that Sonic Youth does. Kind of hints at those more contemplative moments on Daydream or even Washing Machine/A Thousand Leaves and no doubt fits right alongside the SYR stuff on my shelf. Now I'm very excited.

Back in 1986, after recording EVOL, Sonic Youth recorded the score for Ken Friedman’s 1987 film Made in U.S.A., which they eventually released as a soundtrack album in 1995. Before that soundtrack was completed though, the band tracked a rehearsal session of music for the film that’s actually pretty different from the finished version. That rehearsal, recorded at the studio Spinhead, will see the light of day on June 17 as the Spinhead Sessions. We’re premiering a track off that release, “Theme with Noise.”
This track, like the rest of the album, is entirely instrumental, more similar to the jams and extended interludes the band incorporated into their live shows or their SYR releases than the song-oriented EVOL that was recorded months earlier. It’s no secret that Sonic Youth were masters of this kind of thing, and “Theme with Noise” is no exception. It’s at times eerie and dissonant, and strangely melodic at others. It’s also a quiet song, more interested in atmosphere and psychedelia than the feedback overload or punk-ish drive that Sonic Youth sometimes offered. It’s very worth checking out, which you can do here:
1. Ambient Guitar & Dreamy Theme (16:39)
2. Theme with Noise (4:16)
3. High Mesa (8:36)
4. Unknown Theme (2:41)
5. Wolf (1:37)
6. Scalping (3:57)
7. Theme 1 Take 4 (2:32)
I am way into this.
Wow, I love this track. I am now really looking forward to this release.

If I'm not mistaken, those early early albums and EPs weren't widely available until a few years ago, right? I don't think I heard anything before Bad Moon Rising until that re-release, save a stray MP3 here or there. My question is, are those re-releases remastered? They sound pretty good for how cheaply they were recorded.

Confusion is Sex/Kill Your Idols was remastered and reissued in the mid 90s on Geffen along with their other pre-Goo albums. I don't think the self-titled EP was reissued at that time, though. There was a remastered version with extra songs released in 2006 on Geffen, I think they're still using those same masters now.
FYI - the 90s Geffen remaster of Bad Moon Rising is messed up (bad transfer, track splits in the wrong spot, etc.) The original CD issue sounds a lot better. I haven't heard the recent remaster that came out on the band's label yet so I don't know if they went back and fixed it or not.

I likely have the original CD of Bad Moon Rising. I bought it at a used CD store in the early 2000s and it was looking pretty rough then.

That 2006 remaster of ST must be what I'm thinking of, though I heard that and Confusion/Kill around the same time. Late 2000s.

Sympathy For The Strawberry is such a cool, hypnotic tour de force.
Its one of those gems this band have hidden that suddenly one day hits you in the face.

Let's talk about "The Eternal" -- I understand a lot of folks rate this one pretty low, but I'm about five tunes in and so far it sounds pretty good to me, if fairly standard fare for them. What are everyone's favorites and least favorites on here?
