I love going to movies with a morning start.
So do I. It's cheaper, and it doesn't eat up much of my day. And the audiences tend to be mostly old people, which means peace and quiet (usually).
Having worked in a movie theater for years, reading a statement like that, I can only assume you're the fapper in the back..comes to the early shows 'cos they're empty just to enjoy a danger jerk:)

Can someone else hurry up and see this thing so i'm not jumping on it alone...

more than 8 hours of film for only two worthwhile scenes..riddles in the dark(Gollums cave) and Bilbo waking and having to deal with Smaug..

I got into a heated discussion with a lass from work about this - I was using Dime's arguements about why the film sucked, she wasn't having any of it. She loved this movie

That's ok..i can see why some people would like it.
But it fails on far many more levels than it succeeds.

My favourite nutshell take on it

The Lord of The Rings trilogy were excellent movies with occasional misjudged moments.
The Hobbit trilogy were three misjudged movies with occasional moments of excellence.

This was her take on things that you'd raised - I'm still neutral since I haven't gotten around to going yet.

First off, no, the encounter at Dol Goldur should NOT have been the main focus of the film since none of that is actually in The Hobbit. It was being added to make these more of a prequel. If all you want out of The Hobbit is for it to be a LOTR prequel and not it's own story, then sure, complain. Second, and along the same line, the story of The Hobbit is not the story of Sarumon becoming evil. I love that we don't see that. Also, the ending is the same ending as in The Hobbit. You don't see the aftermath so much, you don't get your movie wrapped up in a neat little self-contained package. But neither are ANY of the LOTR books.

I'm honestly not sure the LOTR movies are really any "better" than these in any meaningful way beyond some aesthetic and tonal differences. I prefer their tone and aesthetic, but really if you look at these movies in terms of narrative or thematic focus, they're all deeply problematic.

That's a well thought out view Dave...wished It was that simple, but she's clearly a fan of the films more than the books by the sounds..her view wouldn't be all that supported, least on the forums and pages I frequent, where it's getting mauled on a scene by scene analysis basis, by people who do know better(by the sounds of things).

Thats true of the source material and the films though.

Like I said - I've not seen it yet, and it's been that long since I've read the book that I'll pretty much just be happy if it keeps me entertained for two hours.

Sure. And, again, I would not criticize any of the films for those reasons because, to me, they are purely exercises in aesthetic/atmosphere/visuals/world-building. I don't care about those narrative problems because I don't care about the narrative.

I'm excited to see what people think. It's problems are the film itself and not adherence or lack of to canon, just be aware..you'll know when you see it.

as to that LV, am eager to read your thoughts tomorrow.
