Red Mosquito

So this is a metal mix I’m giving to a friend who doesn’t really like metal. He hates harsh vocals. I’m trying to give him some more stuff to get into, but I can’t quite figure out his tastes. He says he likes “slow, hypnotic” stuff like Lysol by Melvins (which I gave him, hehe). He also liked “Babylon” by Soulfly (but did not like “Roots Bloody Roots” by Sepultura (???)) and “Backbone” by Gojira (both of those have semi-harsh vocals, so I’m a bit perplexed). He liked “Dream Weaver” by Crowbar but did not like what I showed him of their album Broken Glass (I assume because of the aggressive, hardcore-ish vocal style). He seemed to respond positively to a little Bongripper. Thought Septicflesh was laughable (primarily because of the vocals). He’s seems to have oddly specific likes and dislikes when it comes to metal, so I’m gonna throw this at him to see what sticks:

1. Electric Wizard – “Eko Eko Azarak”
2. Type O Negative – “Christian Woman”
3. Crowbar – “Planets Collide”
4. High on Fire – “Brothers in the Wind”
5. The Sword – “Winter’s Wolves”
6. Gojira – “L’enfant sauvage”
7. Strapping Young Lad – “Love?”
8. Amon Amarth – “Hermod’s Ride to Hel (Lokes Treachery Part 1)”
9. Paradise Lost – “Enchantment”
10. Jesu – “Friends are Evil”
11. Electric Wizard – “Saturn’s Children”

Any thoughts/opinions?

Hahaha, I tried that already.

But honestly, I understand the resistance. It took me a long time to get into them myself. They're an acquired taste.

Anyone else enjoying this beast of an album?

Still haven't heard it, but Sky Burial was quite good so my expectations are high for this one.

I guess we'll see how I feel after the new album "shine" wears off a bit, but right now I'm liking this one a lot more than Sky Burial.

For you metal fans, what are your thoughts on early Iron Maiden? Like the first 2 or 3 albums?

The first 2 with Paul Dianno are really solid albums but Number Of The Beast is immense. It was the template for their career. Piece Of Mind is fucking great too. In fact, don't ask me as their entire 80's output is essential.

If anything I'd put Killers slightly behind the others though.

yeah the past 12 months or so. it's too early in the season for year-end lists which is where i usually pick up on all the things i missed. thanks.
