No Way fucking slaps you rubes. Groovy riff, groovier bass, fun & catchy Ed vocal and chorus. The weird guitar solo followed by that otherworldly bass solo. Drums sounds great. Much more interesting than a flat dud like In Hiding.

i have an mp3 of it backwards somewhere. you can kind of hear it, but i also am listening hard for it to be theredimejinky99 wrote:i'm not sure it was ever actually there. But once someone tells you it is and then you play it backwards, there it is. and your fandom being what it is, wants it to be there. Mine did at least.

1) If it's there, it's sung like the restaurant workers at the end of A Christmas Story singing Deck the Halls. So basically if you can hear it you're racist.Matters wrote:You have to mentally reach to hear it.
2) This thread has become not about flaws in Yield but about flaws in people as they discuss Yield. It's the human condition for any discussion of that which even approaches the divine. So be careful what you say here because our therapists are really going to have a lot to work with.

What makes “Stupid Mop” feel defensible to you, but not “Hummus” or “Red Dot”? i can understand what stupid mop is reaching for - a character study of a lonely and broken person at the end of an album at least partially about how commodification and reification undermines intimacy, even the parasocial intimacy that exists between an artis and their audience. a road not taken situation. and that doesnt feel like too much of a reachKevin Davis wrote:What makes “Stupid Mop” feel defensible to you, but not “Hummus” or “Red Dot”? that doesnt make stupid mop good, mind you. or even necessary. but its not purposeless
what would you offer for color red/red dot?

Nothing really, I just think it’s a cool, breezy-sounding thing that works with the flow of the album. A flavor enhancer, something that livens up the sound palette. Like most of their interlude tracks, I have a hard time imagining how it could inspire hatred, but I can certainly understand not caring about it.stip wrote:i can understand what stupid mop is reaching for - a character study of a lonely and broken person at the end of an album at least partially about how commodification and reification undermines intimacy, even the parasocial intimacy that exists between an artis and their audience. a road not taken situation. and that doesnt feel like too much of a reachKevin Davis wrote:What makes “Stupid Mop” feel defensible to you, but not “Hummus” or “Red Dot”? Re: What is Each Album's Major Flaw?: Yield
I am pretty firmly in the “Yield has no flaws” camp — I would still like an album that replaces “GTF” and “In Hiding” with B-sides, and I understand the reasoning for proposing it, but I wouldn’t argue for it myself. I find both of those songs pretty central to the feel of the record.
Apart from maybe making Binaural a double, I don’t think I’d change anything about their first seven albums. It’s tempting to look back 25 years later with evolved tastes and a lifetime of overexposure and romanticize a scenario where the band downplayed their big swings in favor of quirky artistic impulses (or vice versa, I guess), but I have to acknowledge that the records that exist are the ones I fell in love with. To that end I am glad they exist as they do, and that we have it all to choose from now, in whatever configuration.
For folks who’d like to see certain songs nixed from Yield (or any other record) — are these songs you’ve always more or less disliked (or found not to fit), or are they just songs you’ve grown tired of and/or don’t connect with as much now?

Re: What is Each Album's Major Flaw?: Yield
I would be interested in others' thoughts on this:
As a studio document, I am on record for loving Yield through and through. However, I am consistently disinterested in Yield songs when played live. They don't excite me. I don't know if this is a comment on the songs, the band now vs. then, the increasingly disappointing mix/guitar sounds on bootlegs.
