I deleted a post because I feel like I'm posting too much about a band I don't really have a deep relationship with and haven't enjoyed any of their new records in twenty years or more.

Anyway, less Frusciante and Klinghoffer, more Hillel Slovak (and Jack Irons)!

I found Josh to come across as quite unlikeable in both this and the Maron interview.

He seems clear-headed and gracious about the whole thing, even though he is obviously bummed. I don't know how you get to "unlikeable".

This has only happened a few times.

It's probably an unfair assessment of Josh, seeing as I don't know the guy.

It wasn't his response to his firing as such either, more that he comes across like an overgrown teenager and also kind of disingenuous about his career. It seemed to me as though he's unwilling to acknowledge how his own choices have contributed to his career frustrations. He also seems very calculating in the way he progressed his career, particularly his entry into the Chili Peppers. Like I said a few pages back, I wouldn't be surprised if Frusciante ended their friendship as he realised Klinghoffer viewed it as more transactional than he did, but that's just a guess.

That said, the album is very long, so as is my wont, I retracked it and have been enjoying my new version much more than the original form:

1. Can't Stop (How did they not open with this song considering that percussive intro?!)
2. By the Way
3. The Zephyr Song
4. This is the Place
5. Universally Speaking
6. Venice Queen (REALLY like US and VQ as a mid-album one > two punch.)
7. Throw Away Your Television
8. Minor Thing
9. Midnight
10. Dosed
11. Cabron

What’s your trimmed SA track list? I might start with that because the thought of a 2-hour album is daunting.

So thanks to Jorge talking about "Universally Speaking" and the resultant conversation, I've been revisiting By the Way for the first time since high school, at which time I had written off most of this band as bro-y garbage (probably thanks in part to them being THE ubiquitous favorite band of all the jocks in my high school), but I'm finding that notion is not holding true for this album at all. I'm surprised by how delicate and tasteful the playing, compositions, and even the vocals ( ) are. "Dosed" and "Minor Thing" are particularly lovely.

That said, the album is very long, so as is my wont, I retracked it and have been enjoying my new version much more than the original form:

I never expected this album to become one of my favourites, especiallly at the time of release when all the singles were coming out. Even though all the singles are strong I've left most of them off because I've heard them enough.

I wanted to put tear, rivers of avalon and havana affair in there somewhere but then it would probably defeat the purpose of trimming the album down. This version could possibly also not flow very well, but it has all the songs I listen to most, and changes the vibe a lot.

Ha! Kiedis wrote in his book about how disappointing was to work with Andy in their first album. Basically, he hated them and gotta say, he was right.
