This reasoning is kinda faulty and grocery store workers generally prefer you to return your cart.

Oh please. This is how things have always been done! It's tradition! It's perfectly acceptable to leave the cart between spaces. It's not like I leave them in a way that people are unable to park. I'm not a monster.

They already rip us off on the prices. Now you want to do free labor for them?!

I actually always put away my cart but that article you linked to was really just workers saying we're busy and it's not a task we enjoy doing.
