What do you consider proper?
Not a soundtrack and not a Ukulele album. I like both of those albums, but I would really like to see Ed do a full-fledged solo album.
So just a more traditional rock album?
It's not even about the content so much. More stuff like Into the wild would be ideal, really. Just more fleshed out.

I just kinda feel like Pearl Jam is holding each of the members of Pearl Jam back at the moment.
I guess I just don't understand what keeps Into the Wild and Ukulele Songs from being proper albums. I'm just trying to pin down exactly what you mean.

Into the Wild, I sort of understand, given that it's music written for and inspired by a film. The songs are shorter by necessity, but I wouldn't say they aren't fully realized songs.
I guess Ukulele songs just seems a bit like a novelty album to me. On Into the Wild, it's basically what you said - there's a great EP in there, but not a full album.

As I said, I like both of them, but I'd be interested to see what Vedder would put out without the constraint of writing for a movie soundtrack/writing everything on a Uke.
me too. I'd like to see him have a backing band that didn't muddle the idea (but not as a replacement for PJ).

everyone over the last 4 years has had a fairly prolific to very prolific array of solo/side projects, most of which have been pretty well received. Doesn't it make sense to see how that creativity did or did not play back into recording sessions before you make that judgement?

I just wish it seemed like the members of pj still had a passion to create pj music. i think Jeff does, and Im pretty sure mike does, but they seem like the only ones

I don't even care. But if the passion is elsewhere I wish they'd just make that their main focus. Why waste time with Pearl Jam if it's keeping you creatively tethered?
Spoiler: show
I know the answer to that question. It pays the bills.

Pearl Jam needs to worry about bill paying like Bruce Springsteen needs to worry about the job opportunities he lost due to the invention of automated carwashes.

Im still too much of a pearl jam fan to want them to give that up and focus on their other bands, as much as i like brad, ed solo, stone, and rndm, i still like every pj album over any side project album.

i have essentially zero interest in any pearl jam side project (unless it was eddie) despite my respect for each of them as individuals. The music they make together is vastly superior to me than what do on their own

So Backspacer is better than Into The Wild, Bayleaf, and Mad Season?

I don't really like Into the Wild that much. Three good songs (two of which are covers), and a bunch of forgettable vignettes.

Yet I still find it much more enjoyable than Backspacer.

I think Hard Sun (cover or not) is one of my favorite pearl jam related songs of the decade. No Ceilign Far Behind, Society, Guaranteed, and Rise are really good. I think Tuloumne and wolf are nice little moments.

I could do without end of the road. But beyond the strength of the songs the whole album itself was just appealing as a whole. A lot crammed into a bunch of short, simple songs.

you know, there's really only a few songs on Mad Season I ever cared about. The b-sides with Mark Lanegan were all pretty disappointing to.
