His creative juices and inspiration are gone and forgotten. It actually makes me sad. Of course I want to hear new songs and get a new PJ album, but at the same time, this isn’t really PJ anymore. It’s different and infinitely shittier than I ever believed PJ could be. They (Ed) have run out of anything meaningful to say and have forgotten how deliver their message in interesting ways. So I feel stuck in a place where I’m pissed that they aren’t even close to releasing a new album, but I also have zero faith that any new music will be anything other than embarrassing. Ugh.

That response from Jeff is exactly as I expected.

Bullshit marketing via the annual fanclub single.

Seriously. Focus your efforts on a young(er) band who are in their prime. Arctic Monkeys are just about to drop their latest album and they're fully in their No Code - Riot Act era.

All you're getting from Pearl Jam is dad rock every 5-6 years. It's obvious there isn't any will within any of them to put out a new record.

Outside of MSG, and should they ever play DC again, I’m done with PJ shows after this year.

Clearly older artists are capable of putting out fantastic stuff, just not these guys apparently? Look at The Breeders, or Neko Case, or hell, even John Prine's new album is good and that dude is in his 80's

THeres always a possibility they can.
But these guys don’t see each other one end of the year to the other. It’s not like their pals or a working band. They only get together to do this once every three four five years. It’s just Not how great music is made.

They need to just once knock together ten songs and put it out raw. It’s the year/two years sucking all the life out of them in post production that kills all the energy.

The demos are always better.

It's frustrating to read that even a member of the band doesn't really know where they're up to with the new record. They've clearly lost the oomph to put out new stuff, but at least they still seem to enjoy the live shows.

Maybe they've run out of creative steam. However, I'm holding out hope that they're just in a lull and they'll bounce back with some back to back stellar albums. You never know.

I bet Dylan fans in the 80s/90s were saying the same thing - after a string of uninspired records such as Empire Burlesque, Knocked Out Loaded, and Down in the Groove I bet fans believed he was done. On the whole, those albums suck compared to earlier work. But then he threw out Oh, Mercy to close the 80s and showed that there was still something there. Then came an atrocious record in Under the Red Sky and two cover albums. But then he found his muse and peaked again with Time Out Of Mind, 'Love & Theft', and Modern Times.

Even Springsteen had a dodgy couple of years after he broke up the E Street Band. Human Touch and Lucky Town are pretty crap overall. But then after a solo album and a few quiet years he got the band back together and put out The Rising and Magic which are great.

Pearl Jam might prove to use that they're in this class by putting out a stone cold classic in the next few years.

Or maybe they won't and I'm just far too optimistic :?

I think it's a lot easier for a solo artist (Springsteen, Dylan, Neil Young, etc.) to work their way back into a fertile creative headspace than it is for five guys to collectively do the same.

You're probably right. I think we need Ed to somehow find that creative spark and hopefully inspire the others to follow him.

I mean, it's not all bad. I think their last great album was the self-titled, and there's one or two good tracks on Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. I don't think they've released an outright dud yet. 10 albums, ranging from great to ok isn't that bad.

Are there any bands (not solo artists) that made consistently great music for more than 20 years? Without ever breaking up and reforming?

Drive-By Truckers. Although they're essentially two solo artists + backing band.

Ed did so much music back in the day, with PJ and as a guest thats its baffling to me how little he does these days. Yeah, he goes on tour with the band and solo, but i thought he was going to record more as a solo artist after uke songs.
