Alabama votes to end marriage licenses
I don't get this. This is almost a good thing, right? Why does it feel like a trap?

Around 68 judges in Alabama have been refusing to issue ANY marriage certificates, to avoid having to issue ones to gay people. This gets them off the hook, because now they only have to sign a confirmation of receipt of documents.
What impacts it may have, and whether those will turn out to be positive or not, I don’t know. But that’s the impetus for the bill.

Like I said, I don’t know. I don’t know, for example, how this new approach might or might not create opportunities to refuse paperwork processing without the oversight or legalities associated with refusing licenses.

Bet it’ll cause a bigger stir if they go ahead with the plan to tariff video games.
