I think the reason I like The Fixer so much is that it's got a new wave kinda sound that Pearl Jam doesn't do very often (if ever). So I like the uniqueness of it in that sense.
But my favorite thing about the song is that I think the lyrics are actually really dark. An unstable and delusional voice is singing the song. However that sad and sort of dangerous message is juxtaposed by really upbeat, summer fun music. I love when artist do that. It deepens the listening experience for me.
I don't share it, but that's an interesting interpretation.

This was my impression initially and you've just reminded me about it. It's a shame that this impression didn't last for most people. There was a time when we were coming up with all sorts of interesting readings of the themes and concepts. I guess maybe some of us eventually decided that we were sort of forcing interesting ideas onto songs that PJ hadn't thought about that deeply.
I'm not sure it really matters, though, what PJ intended or thought about in this example. It's still there.
And Ed himself talked about the lyrics being fairly dark and desperate. So, at least that level of thought was put into it. So maybe it is something that was discussed by the band. Look at Can't Keep. Ed imagined that as a punk song initially. And we've heard them all talk about leaving certain songs off of albums because they don't fit for whatever reason.
It's not impossible that there was a good amount of thought put into it. Maybe not. Like I said, it doesn't change anything here. But it is possible.
I can buy that. Thing is, I'm not sure they intended cheesy pop album either.
That's fair. I'm sure they didn't intend cheesy. But I wouldn't be surprised if they thought they were going for breezy pop album.
LESS CHEESY MORE BREEZY

Still an improvement from Avocado when all they were going for was louder.

2 different approaches for them to fuck up songs that aren't necessarily bad.
With louder i mean compress and limit the song to the point it's impossible to tell if the mix was any good to begin with.

Big Wave and Supersonic are both necessarily bad.

Click....click...click...click.
"Oh it's now an Into the Wild thread".
Pretty excited about the new album.
This appears to be the goto thread now. "I had a beer and played disc golf, listened to Yield. Man, I miss the old days. Wanna head job?"
Bring on the new album, announce the tour and stop being pussies. Dave A wouldn't allow this shit and then he'd get fired again. I LOVE TEN MUTHAFUKKAS.

Per the 10C forum:
Triple J in Australia has heard the "cracking" new Song "Mind Your Manners" and "Pearl Jam fans are going to love it"
I guess the question is what do they consider a Pearl Jam fan. But...we do now know the song is "cracking".
This leads me to believe my recent dream was correct. Can't wait to hear this shit? Hope I love it

It was on Triple M Sydney's Twitter feed:
http://bit.ly/17e6MVV
We just heard the new Pearl Jam song "Mind Your Manners" from the upcoming album and what a cracking 3-minute beauty it is!
Triple M's Head of Rock said Pearl Jam fans are gonna love it.
"You'll wet your pants over this. Think "Spin the Black Circle". Short, sharp, hard and loud," he said.
"If it's any indication of the album that's to come (rumoured October release), the guys have picked up where they left Backspacer and added turbo charging. PJ fans are gonna love it. "
The new Pearl Jam single is out around July and we'll have it first.

IT'S BACKSPACER ONLY MORESO!
I think it might be advisable to take any review by "Triple M's Head of Rock" with a not-insubstantial grain of salt. Beyond this one song being loud and fast, there's really not much there to get worried about either way.

A RETURN TO FORM!
...the guys have picked up where they left Backspacer and added turbo charging...
A LOGICAL EXTENSION OF BACKSPACER!

Backspacer turbo charged. Makes me think of lots of supersonics. Minus the tongue in cheek fun element. Not sure how that makes me feel.
