Really, it's a courtesy for the people that have to clean up the mess.

It's probably more like if they accidentally clunk their head on a ladder rung they won't pass out and fall to their death. They'll just go "ow" and be more careful next time.

I'm not cool with heights, ever. My wife convinced me to go to the top of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, and I consider it a personal accomplishment that I didn't shit my pants. I basically stayed in the middle of the observation platform, because I was afraid going to one side was going to cause it to fall over.
