I'm trying out Spotify's "Your Daily Mix" playlist that they curate for you. This first one is pretty awesome. Little St. Vincent, Father John Misty and PJ Harvey so far. I'm digging it.

Exactly why I'm so disappointed by Masseduction. Feels like such an obvious grasp for commercial relevancy.

Besides a few moments (the title track and New York come to mind), I think the poppiness of St. Vincent's new record is a bit overstated. The majority of songs on this record could have shown up on the S/T without being too jarring, for example.

She's also gone on record several times saying that she didn't want to use live percussion on the record, or maybe any time in the near future. She wants those loops and beats and synths. I knew before the album dropped that there wouldn't be many (if any) live drums and that she wasn't going to tour with a drummer. I think any artist stretching and trying new things, following interests them is always a good thing. Sometimes I like the result, sometimes I don't. But I always support that kind of thinking/playing. It helps when it someone as talented as Annie Clark because she has her own orbit. She pulls me toward her and turns me on to new ideas and sounds. I don't listen to a lot of music that sounds like Masseduction. Maybe that's why it's so much more interesting to me. Ignorance really can be bliss.

I agree and I don't. I agree the poppiness is being overstated. But I don't know that the majority of these songs sound like they belong or could be at home on S/T. This still sounds really different to me than that record. But I do see you overall point. And I agree in general.

Spotify does a pretty good job of recommending stuff.
