I like a good mix of long and short for pacing. When you come out of a huge fictional world it's hard to dive right in to another one.

I’ve been in the biggest slump this year. The worst in decades.

2021 is going to be the Year of Reading Long Books for me. I'm finally going to read all the long books I've been intimidated by, or re-read the books I've never picked up again because it would take too long to get through. I'm finally going to read Infinite Jest and Robert Caro. I'm finally going to re-read Underworld and What It Takes. I'll actually read Stamped by Ibram Kendi and Jill Lepore's These Truths. Maybe I'll look at some Doris Kearns Godwin or Jean Edward Smith. Maybe I'll look at Don Quixote, or Moby Dick, or Dostoevsky. I'm going to read The Aeneid and that big book of boxing essays that I bought at the Borders closing sale. It's going to be a good year
That’s cool. I like this idea. I always tell myself I’m going to rotate between long and short, fiction and non-fiction, but it never seems to work.
or maybe you just didnt like the books? Dont force yourself.

Consider it.

About being on the wrong side of WWI, but Junger was hardcore.

Continuous. Lots of flying body parts, dead friends, writhing in agony and general misery. But after a hearty meal, everyone was in good spirits again.

THere is a lot of humor in it, too, though I can't tell if it's intentional or not. Their constant disappointment at failing to take a prisoner (because they keep killing everyone or else botching their attack) is pretty funny.

I have every book I've read going back to mid-2007 logged on Goodreads, just over 500 books now. I've given each one a rating in Goodreads's one-to-five-star rating system, but I've been uncomfortable with it for a long time. What does it mean when I give Euripides four stars? That it could have been better? Try again next time, Euripides. What does it mean when I give three stars to a dense academic text that I agree with politically but I have some concerns about its methodology and didn't have an enjoyable time reading? I don't write reviews on there, so it won't be clear what exactly my concerns are.
So, tonight I went through my whole collection and cleared every rating. I created shelves for "favorite-fiction" and "favorite-non-fiction" quickly, just as a quick way to find stuff I love.
I only left three ratings up: 5 star ratings for ST's novel and a book of boxing essays that features Rafa; and a one-star rating for Malcolm Gladwell's Blink because fuck that book for real.
