Giving Alien: Covenant a second viewing.

Characters feel very bland in this one, action scenes have been done better before. Didn’t mind seeing it again, but I feel about the same as before about it.

Thinking about doing a deep dive into why zootopia is one of the most sinister movies ever made (even worse than Barbie!)

It is because you have predators and prey living together in some sort of harmony, but the only way that works is for the predators to voluntarily give up the very thing that makes them predators. Essentially their "humanity" equivalent. Their very nature is evil in the Zootopia universe. They have to become docile and "civilized" like the prey. This would literally kill them unless they subsisted on insects and plant protein, which I doubt they find very fulfilling.

Meanwhile, the prey animals don't have to change or compromise anything. They just get to live in a better world (ie one that suits their own needs at the expense of the predators).

I mean, early drafts went even darker: the predators all had to wear shock collars in case they "acted up", by which I mean that they acted like predators.

Its a fucked up basis for a movie that is built on so many racial metaphors.

Also, Zootopia, as it is, is the story of the victory of slave morality over the masters', the sick over the healthy, the resentment-filled herd over the creative and free, as told from the perspective of those who hold that morality (history written by the winners).

"B-but...but isn't Zootopia an allegory about how the prey keeps the predators in line with institutional racism? Aren't the prey animals the baddies? The villain was a sheep after all?"

The morality of the prey reigns supreme, and thus all are judged by it, but for the benefit of the prey only. The prey animals as a class are morally superior to the predators on account of their lack of ability to be predators. But from the perspective of a predator, there would be nothing inherently superior about not being predator-like, and in fact it would be detrimental to their health and happiness. The predators (only about 10 percent of society) have to change for the benefit of the prey while receiving nothing in return but overcrowded, chaotic cities, oppression, mistrust, guilt and repression. Their way of life was destroyed long before the story takes place. The fundamental aspect of being a predator - eating prey - is depicted as evil throughout. The predators are burdened with original sin, and the predators are made to feel shame for their natural traits, while the prey gets to live in blissful righteousness. The only "good predators" are those who don't act like predators. This never changes throughout the story. This is the message: for the benefit of a herd that hates you, you must cast away your very essence and accept the moral rule of the herd and set aside your natural powers and interests. "For the greater good!" bleh!

As Nietzsche says in The Genealogy of Morals, “There is nothing very odd about lambs disliking birds of prey, but this is no reason for holding it against large birds of prey that they carry off lambs. And when the lambs whisper among themselves, 'These birds of prey are evil, and does this not give us a right to say that whatever of the opposite of a bird of prey must be good?', there is nothing intrinsically wrong with such an argument - though the birds of prey will look somewhat quizzically and say, 'We have nothing against these good lambs; in fact, we love them; nothing tastes better than a tender lamb.'”

By making it a racial allegory, it's actually even worse. It then says that minorities are naturally violent and aggressive, but once indoctrinated with the benevolent and superior values of the majority (whites), they can become docile, productive members of the herd. They can lose those natural tendencies, so long as they "act white."

It's a very fucked universe they inhabit.

We also need to talk about Star Trek Insurrection, a movie in which the good guys are the bad guys, hoarding life saving medicine for untold billions because they want to live like hippies.

Oh and that weird prequel to The Kingsman. Pretty much an ode to Anglo meddling and interventionism.

Finally watched Asteroid City and I loved it real hard. Cartoonishly beautiful and full of immediately endearing characters. Goes unexpected directions and is brimming with style. Looking at the heart and soul needed to make a movie, a play, or anything. Found it super moving. ScarJo's best performance in a decade

And whatever cartoons kids these days look at. I want to begin the process of ruining his life by hooking him on cinema as a hobby, instead of something productive like karate or woodworking before it is too late.

I love Brazil so dang much. Though I didn’t see it until I was an adult, but I genuinely think I would have liked it at 14 years old. But I also know similar movies would be near the bottom of the list if f movies I’d show to almost every teenager I’ve known

I also failed. We watched like ten minutes of 12 Angry Men before he gave up. I obviously chose wrong. He chose to put on Liar Liar (which he'd seen before) but he was uncomfortable with all the sexual jokes at the beginning (including Jim Carrey making sex noises) and we ended up watching the first half of the The Rock Jumanji movie.
