Someone at Birth Movies Death posted this and I think it perfectly describes my thoughts on Star Wars in general in a simple succinct way.

The longer this shitshow drags on, the more I realize that SW was never designed to last or be dwelled upon. The OT was this fascinating vertical slice of the world that seems fascinating at glance but the moment you actually take a good look at it in detail, it just starts to fall apart.

I dont agree. The first three are great, the prequels are good (its basically the acting and fx that dont work for me) and the new sequels are fine ( TFA is a soft reboot and i agree that its not that good but TLJ is a fine movie itself and its doing something different)

But of course, as long as they continue to make them...well yeah, its not that special anymore.

The biggest mistake they’re making is, for the most part, not pushing themselves into experimenting and going somewhere new. This was always the single biggest thing that defined the “feel” of Star Wars for me. As I’ve said before, I don’t think the world-building of SW is very deep or developed, and I don’t think there’s ever been much of a unified tone or aesthetic to the movies. But what each movie from A New Hope to Revenge of the Sith had in common was frontier filmmaking - George Lucas pushing as far as he could into the new limits of what could be accomplished through movie technology.

This is why TFA leaning into nostalgia and trying to use old-fashioned techniques seems so wrong-headed to me. It’s the complete opposite of what was being attempted in the OT (or the PT). Of the new movies, only Rogue One feels like SW to me (if one can even define that), and I think it’s because:

1. It’s a new and different take on SW
2. Edwards started in visual effects and knows how to push those boundaries

“Feeling” SW isn’t about characters or mythology or tone or adventure or fun or whatever - it’s about being bold and pushing the medium. The safe DisneyMarvel approach is antithetical to what Star Wars has always been.

Rogue one was taken off Edwards and by all accounts was a steaming dumpster fire with no narrative and countless hours of footage with no central plot or theme.
Precisely because LFL had been brave and given him a free hand to do whatever he wanted they ended up hugely expensive reshoots and a dire situation saved only by new talent hired to save it in the editing room.
Should have been easy. Steal the plans to the Death Star. Get the plans to the rebellion.

He couldn’t even deliver that and went to town in the sandbox to such a degree he was fired in all but name.

You can’t accuse Disney of anything. They market the films. They don’t make the films. Lucasfilm does. Please remember this going forward.

But if you’re going to accuse them of being safe, the blame lies front and Center at gareth Edwards doorstep.

If they wanted to distance themselves from Edwards because it was that bad, they would have. Look what happened in Solo. I think the R1 stuff is exaggerated. Hell, they gave him a cameo in TLJ, didn't they?

R1 is easily the best new SW movie. So good.

They didn’t distance themselves. They just quietly dealt with it.
Those people hired to fix it later spoke. Gilroy was pretty much scathing in interviews after the fact. The films all overlapped in production. Rian Johnson is in rogue one.

Rogue One and TLJ keep switching for me, but the pacing of Rogue One, that furious ending and all that death - so good.
