So is it just me, or does last night's battle for the north involving approx 10k people seem REALLY small? They've played it up like the north is super important.

Aren't we talking about a time/culture where a huge percentage of the adult males are more or less part of some kind of military/army/fighting faction - or at least available/obligated to fight when called upon? Seems like both armies woulda been bigger last night.

The population of the North is only like 4 million. Pretty much every bit of the North's military might has been exhausted since the War of Five Kings.

With that said, last night's battle was 6000 vs 2000 (not accounting for the Vale) and it looked smaller than that on screen.

Yeah, I was wondering about Lord Too Fat To Sit A Horse and his men.

I was waiting for the Umbers to switch sides right up until it was too late.

Just watched the episode again. Jon totally realized he screwed it all up when he drew his sword. A cool moment. Man alive, that was a well directed piece of filmmaking.

On the second viewing it becomes pretty clear the Umber's hatred for the wildlings is greater than their love for the Starks. It was subtle, but makes sense for the world. Smalljohn hesitates to attack Jon long enough to be overcome by the other forces.

That's a good point.

Smalljon was a cunt. Thank god tormund bite his shit out.

I also really enjoyed this shot/moment.

Great visuals during the battle. The trampling, near suffocation of Jon was pretty tense.

As an aside, I hope Lyanna Mormont lived. Her house shield saved Jon from Ramsay's arrows in the courtyard confrontation.
