Very easily. Zahler is a better director than Aster

See I don't get how anyone can like that guys movies. Talk about miserable garbage.

People will say how Aster or Beau is Afraid is too negative, then rave about Dragged Across Concrete. Talk about a truly loathsome view of life! I don't get it.

Yes I agree with Burr. Aster is legitimately off kilter and unique, bone tomahawk is just trying really hard.

It's funny that Bart says Bone Tomahawk "tries too hard," I see it as very unpretentious. For me the problem with Ari Aster's first two movies isn't that they're "too negative", it's that they're both overreaching and very boring (Midsommar especially, about which the only positive thing I can say is that it features a pretty realistic cinematic depiction of tripping on shrooms). Zahler is just a great visual stylist that makes very simple but very visceral, gripping stories that are completely unapologetic about how they're presented. And it's a pretty grim worldview, but I don't go to the movies to have my worldview reflected back at me.

But yeah, Beau is Afraid is really good. I see it as Ari Aster finally making a movie that matches his cinematic ambitions, one that doesn't feel like a little kid wearing grown-up clothes. More of this, please.

Hereditary was like a well made student film or something. Like he was still figuring it out, but the pieces are there.

I like the part where Gabriel Byrne says "what language is even that"

The Pope's Exorcist. Wow, Crowe is really slumming it, huh? I was expecting something a little more than a B-movie, but this was crap! He's having fun though. That's all that really matters.

They are spectacularly well made movies. That in of itself is an achievement worth celebrating and enjoying.

That makes a lot of sense.

I love the sequel bait at the end. Can't wait for more.

I was planning to go see Bottoms tomorrow (mainly because The Bear's Ayo Edibiri is in it), so I looked at Shiva Baby (same director) this evening. But it is....insufferable?....so I'm not sure about Bottoms anymore. Maybe I'll see the newest iteration of the Old Man Liam Neeson Action movie instead

Hah, I really liked Shiva Baby. Felt it did a very good job of playing with tension and gradually letting us into the characters. What did you hate about it?

The humor is all around being annoying. Like, haha, isn't it funny how annoying everyone in this movie is? And immature, haha.
No. Annoying isn't funny. It's kind of just annoying
