It's also funny that the native American women in almost every Hollywood movie turns out not to be (as is the case with Wind River).

That is interesting:

Kelsey Asbille: In 2017 and 2018, when she was cast in Native American roles, she stated in multiple interviews she was "part Cherokee" and that she had "Native heritage". She told The New York Times that she was of "Eastern Band Cherokee descent" and that playing an Indigenous woman was "in [her] blood." This resulted in the tribe issuing a statement that they have no record of Chow, nor did they find any evidence that she is a descendant.

Julia Jones: Julia Jones was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Frank Jones and Penny Wells. She has a younger brother named Cody. She has stated that her mother is of English descent, and that her father "is part Choctaw, Chickosaw, and African-American"

Think this was fine as a sequel, but would make little sense as a standalone film. It even showed several scenes from the original, referenced the action from it all the time, and had some jokes that were only really understood in that way. Still with the same director and actors (with roles that were alive), were there, and it felt genuine.

Good Time

Fairly recent rewatch. Robert Pattinson is the terrific in this. Both a dark comedy, a movie about crime, drugs, brotherhood, developmentally disabled key role, and an exciting thrill ride.

Final two rewatches from 2017 were I, Tonya and Call Me by Your Name (which we’ve started, but not finished). Both top ten movies of the year.

You guys weren't kidding. This movie stinks.

The action sequences were dogshit. Special effects were a big step down from the first film despite a $40m higher budget and 3-4 years of tech advancements to work with.

Terrible dialogue, to the point were I was surprised it had the same writers as the first film. Cruise wasn't really able to cook. Basically unsalvageable.

Way too much reliance on the ol' perfect disguise switch-a-roo (John Woo also directed 1997's Face-Off, lol).

The exaggerated-Australian agent was unbelievably corny. Just, what the hell?

Pros:

Mega babe Thandiwe Newton
Limp Bizkit in the opening sequence

Cons:

Basically everything else

It had to be done, but I need a palette cleanser.

M:I 3 is one of the best of the franchise, so that should wash the taste out of your mouth nicely.

Wanted to see Columbus and A Ghost Story as well, but they were not available anywhere here. Will get to them eventually.

The Villainess -- cool Korean action movie, lots of drama, great action scenes
Lowlife -- very absurd, extremely violent black comedy. The name "Tarantino" gets thrown around as a comparison but that's not quite right. Really funny
Let the Corpses Tan - Italian psychedelia, super tense, and very weird. One of my faves
