that's a great justification, LV. that perfectly encapsulates the argument that i wish i could as articulately convey to people who disparage sampling.

Guys, what should I listen to from Kanye in order to have my mind blown like never before because he's enough of a genius to brag about it endlessly like a fuckin tool?
Please note: as soon as I hear some autotune bullshit, I turn it off.
Thanks in advance, RM!

But learning --- or mastering --- an instrument is way more difficult. At least, for most people.

As long as it produces music that moves and excites you, you shouldn't have to worry too much about what beat from an obscure soul song was overmodulated beyond recognition to make up the rhythm base.durdencommatyler wrote:But again, I don't have a wealth of rap/hiphop knowledge. I've owned up to that. Sampling is something that comes with the territory. You can't really avoid it. So it takes something else to elevate the song beyond that, for me. A lot of what the Beastie's do is really interesting to me. I've never really taken the time to consider it or break it down or whatever. Maybe I should.
But if I notice a sample or if the sample overwhelms the rest of the song, it turns me off. I don't know what's sampled in Root Down. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.
There are other samples that I can dig, though. So there are times that I'm into it. Perhaps the rest of the time I'm just an uninformed asshole.

Until you've worked on Ableton, you're talking out of your ass. It's a much more complex system to learn than a guitar.durdencommatyler wrote:Yes, I do.LoathedVermin72 wrote:You guys realize that creating sophisticated samples is not exactly easy, right?durdencommatyler wrote:There's zero chance that's accurate.theplatypus wrote:Yes.i got bugs wrote:What do you mean by 'than most instruments'?? No, you're right. I agree. But, psychologically, and I'm not saying it makes sense or is fair or right or whatever, but most of the time, if I can recognize the sample, it hinders the song. I'm sure that's hypocritical. But there you have it. Not always. Just most of the time.

Right. I was responding to the laziness comment. I don't think samples are inherently lazy. They can be very sophisticated and take a lot of time and effort to put together.mastaflatch wrote: You both realize that it painfully pointless to know what's harder to learn, right? Yeah, listen to something else.
Autotune is another big reason why I can't listen to Kanye. Other artists use it and I can deal with it. It's all a matter of degree. But the way, the extent to which Kanye uses it and flaunts it, is another thing that turns me off.

Re: Kanye West
But The Doors didn't use autotune and only have a tiny passage of one of their songs that is worth listening to (thanks Genius for saving us time to wade through their pathetic catalogue - Genius sampled it!).durdencommatyler wrote:mastaflatch wrote:Thanks! Yeah, again, I'm sure it makes me lame and ruins whatever sliver of credibility I've built up, but I really REALLY like The Doors.
