Pretty crazy teams like Alabama have had top 5 classes and still overperform.

Amazingly, Al Davis really wanted this guy to coach the Raiders when he then had to settle on Lane Kiffin. :haha:
Petrino is a damn good coach which is why he keeps getting jobs. Is he a good person? Not at all. Sadly that is a secondary requirement for a lot of athletic departments.

Something I don't give Petrino a hard time for is job jumping. When AD's/owners have so much leverage and can fire you at anytime I get wanting to better your situation and provide for your family. If I was a good college coach/NFL coordinator I'd probably never accept an NFL head coaching job. Why? So they can fire me 3-4 years later? I don't blame Petrino for leaving the NFL whatsoever but the way he did it left a lot to be desired.

As for the infidelity thing some people are not wired to be married. I'm not condoning what he did but don't get married if you can't stay faithful. We live in a country where we celebrate Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth. Not exactly great husbands.

Al Davis was senile at that point. He called Lane "Monte Kiffin" TWICE in the presser when Lane was hired. I honestly think Davis was under the assumption he was hiring Monte Kiffin.

I went to a Colorado/Mizzou game in Boulder a few years ago on Halloween. My buddy dressed up as a line judge holding a 5th down marker. That got more of an applause from the Colorado fans than their team did the entire game.

I think the infidelity thing is just a small symptom of how Petrino has been a liar and deceitful for so much of his career and life. I don't necessarily have a problem with Petrino looking out for himself in the harsh world of coaching, but he can probably do better than just leaving a note in the locker room after abruptly resigning from a team.

It is fascinating how that program has completely fallen apart. From the little I've been told it seems that both CSU fans and Broncos fans not affiliated with CU have enjoyed the extra attention.

Also, I wish that chart included BYU, BSU, and maybe a couple of others. That would have been even more informative. Sometimes the P5/G5 split is so stupid.

I will agree with that. They made a great villain. I don't miss the Big 12 but I miss the Big 8.

The two times I went to Boulder for an NU/CU game the Buffs fans were terrible.

Awesome haha.

I read there is a bar in Columbia that refuses to sell beer made in Colorado. I love it. That was the classic screw job.

They just don't give a shit about athletics at that school.

It is weird to me that Eric Bieniemy has not got a shot to be the Colorado coach. He was a star on their 1990 national title team, has been a very good RB coach in the NFL coaching in Minnesota and KC (Peterson and Charles), he is from New Orleans which could probably help them recruit nationally, etc.

The sad thing is, it didn't look like they scored on the 5th down either. Tough to see too clearly without HD though. Could you imagine if that happened today?

I remember ESPN doing a special on that during some Mizzou/CU game. New Belgium and Odell should probably get a pass since they're from Fort Collins.

Yes. I remember that segment now that I think about it.

I think they hate CU in Fort Collins more than anywhere else. I have a good friend who is a CSU alum. They haaaaaate them some CU.

Yeah, the CSU fans I've come across feel the same way. But all good in-state rivalries should generate hatred!

I'm sure Monkey can relate but it's so weird being in a state where you don't have an in state rivalry in football. Also very weird we are in conferences where we don't have real rivals yet. I think one day we could have something with Wisconsin but we got to ya know like stop getting bent over by them. :gomez:

It's also become weird here in Idaho since BSU has completely overwhelmed U of I and now wants nothing to do with them anymore. It's very bitter and sad since when I was a kid it was a serious rivalry in all aspects. I still think they should play every year even if BSU wins 70-0 every time. They've tried to invent new rivalries with the likes of Fresno State but it's nowhere near the same.

Though, I will be realistic enough to say that the state may just not be big enough to support two major football programs. The same thing would have likely happened to Nebraska if a hypothetical "Nebraska State" had emerged at the same time, since the population of the states are similar. If the powers that be at the time could see into the future they should have put the flagship campus in a new college town just outside of Boise, like several other states did (Lincoln/Omaha). Instead, the screwed up geography of this state resulted in screwed up politics that said that since Boise got the capital, North Idaho gets the flagship university and East Idaho gets the second university. BSU was actually a JUCO until 1965.

Wow I did not know Boise use to be a juco. I rooted for Idaho when they had Nathan Enderle. I'm sure Boise will be in the Big 12 someday. Makes too much sense.

The crazy thing about Nebraska is location. For what it's worth per capita we have very good HS football (baseball as well) but with a population of less than 2 million we have to get creative. I like what Riley said about wanting to lock down everything within a 500 mile radius. If we can do a good job there we should be fine. Plenty of talent in places like Denver, KC, Saint Louis, Minneapolis, Iowa, Chicago and Lincoln/Omaha to where if we recruit well there and get lucky in places like Texas, Florida, Cali, Ohio and Georgia we can become much more Nebraska like in football.
